We noticed yesterday that out muscovy duckling was breathing really heavily. It's mouth is always open, almost gasping, and it's body kind of rocks back and forth. We have 14 ducklings (with their momma), and this is the only one it's happening to. It also doesn't really run around with the others anymore.. It seems to be walking fine, but definitely slower than it used to and the others.

Anyone know what could be wrong with it?? Should we separate it from the others? Anything we should start giving it?

Something is defiantly going on with this lil one. how old are they? I would separate it from the others for better observation but maybe put one of the others with it for company. It could be a birth defect maybe heart I had a ducklings about 4 yrs ago appear fine till around 3 weeks of age she started laying around more and breathing through her mouth I am pretty sure she had a heart defect of some kind. She lived till around 4 weeks old. Not saying this will happen to yours but separating and giving some special attention can't hurt. I'd start with good evaluation first check over body to make sure all is normal then begin some vitamin therapy in the drinking water. Most feed stores carry poultry electrolyte pro biotic vitamins. You may have to try a round of antibiotics but first bring the lil on inside so you can really check it out good then post back and we'll see what would be the best course of antibiotics to go with. Also if affordable maybe consider an avain vet or farm vet?

Okay thanks! They're about 12 days old. I hope it's alright. I'll pick up those vitamins on my way home from work. I'll also try and post a video so you can see how it's behaving. I didn't notice anything odd when I picked it up yesterday, but i wasn't really looking so we will check again

Also @Miss Lydia is there a good brand of the vitamins? Or anything in particular I should know about what they can/can't have?

Poultry Nutri-Drench is good stuff, I use it for mine. Have you checked to see if the ducklings nares (sp) are clogged up? I noticed that one of mine was planting and whistling when she was breathing. Her nostrils were clogged up with food. I put all three of them in the bathtub with warm water it did the trick.

Well unfortunately it had already died by the time my boyfriend got home :hit . I'll pick up the vitamins for the rest of them though. Thanks for the help

I'm so sorry

I would for sure give the rest some vitamins for a couple weeks, do daily for 1 week then every couples days for week then once a week. Hopefully everyone else is doing fine. Keep us updated please.

Well tractor supply was out of the nutri drench so I got some durvet vitamins and electrolytes and sav-a-chick electrolytes and vitamins.. Are these okay? We also decided to bring a few of the smaller ducklings inside, just in case. Hopefully everyone else is okay!
