Does anyone know what could cause this? I believe it was laid by a 2-3 year old silkie with no health issues that I can ascertain.

x2. Looks like a big blood spot, or a vessel ruptured. Shouldn't be an issue, things like this are usually a one-off and aren't an ongoing problem.I would guess it is just a giant blood spot, The Poultry Site article has a list of possible causes http://www.thepoultrysite.com/publications/1/egg-quality-handbook/28/blood-spots If it is just a one time thing wouldn't worry about it, just a bigger blood vessel rupture than normal, small ones are pretty common.
