Wow! Nobody knows eh!

I have searched for an answer to this and not found one concerning Muscovies. My hen is on day 25 sitting on her dozen eggs. What I was wondering does she stay on top of the eggs even when they are hatching and trying to get out of the shell or do they get off and watch. Also are there any signs from the hen that hatching is imminent. Coming off the eggs ore often/less etc.

Mine has stayed on the nest both times except for getting off once briefly to eat/drink/etc. Not sure if she helps them with the process. Both times we didn't even realize they had been hatching until we saw the broken egg shell pushed to the side. She hides them well under her wings and body. She also seemed to just stand over them, rather than leaving the nest. Especially when there's a bunch- that's how we have finally get to see them- they'll be moving around under her while she stands. I'm not sure about the signs if hatching is about to happen. We always write down the date she starts sitting and they've hatched 33-35 days later.

Sunday will be 35 days if I'm correct as to day 1. She has been coming off the eggs up to 3 times a day instead of the usual once a day in the beginning. I will look at her eggs today when she comes off the nest for any signs of pipping.

She is one serious dedicated momma. Walks around all puffed up, chirping like mad, and beats the hell out of the other hen in the enclosure. Even the drake has given up trying to rape her as he usually did the minute she came out to eat and drink, she's put him in his place too.

My mommas would attack me if I came anywhere near there nests not to mention let it rip with their nasty broody poo, so be careful when messing with a momma muscovy!! lol
Good luck with your babies, :)
