I let them out,(5 hens/pullets) just before dusk to let them run around for a short time. Now they have never been out free and clear and the seemed to love it. I had one RIR, I think she is the top bird, and she didn't seem to want to go back as it started to get dark. The other 4 were already up into the coop but I had to shoo Marlene back in. Believe me it took some doing. I was wondering if she may have been confused, or was she being difficult because she is the top hen? Would she eventually go in on her own, or was she confused? I'm new to keeping chickens so I'm sorry for the stupid questions. There was no way I would let her stay out all night, so if this will be the norm, chasing her around at night, the free range days are over. Thanks for answers and opinions

If this was their first time out, then thye were just confused. They will get more accustomed to it. they will g in on their own.

Also, you could try luring them back in the coop with a special treat like scratch or something. Mine are suckers for bread!
