Does anyone know of a source of free or cheap barrels for a rainwater collection system? I'm in north Austin, TX and would like to get a good system established ASAP...

Any advice welcomed!

I bought a blue 55gal barrel with a lid that screws off for $25 off of someone in Leander. Saw the ad on craigslist. The ones w/o screw top lids were a little cheaper. And she has a bunch. I haven't seen any for less than $15 (w/o screw top lids) around here but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

I am a little too far away to help you, but I am sure you can find them locally-try manufacturing facilities. At my husbands' workplace, they use 55 gallon metal barrels, with screw-banded lids. He gives them away to anyone who wants them. You may have to clean them out yourself, but free is worth a little work! Think any food service plant, or even any place that may use molding or extrusion machines. Just be sure they held something food-grade, and non-toxic!

Good luck!
