Composting Issues

We go around the neighborhood in the fall and ask folks for the leaves they rake up...most are only too happy to let us have them. Leaf litter is excellent compost material. To speed things along, you can spread them out on your lawn and run your mower over them once or twice...smaller pieces of anything will decompose faster than larger ones. We don't put newspaper...or any paper for that matter, in the compost...as previously stated unless it's soy based ink (and most aren't) the chemicals aren't a good thing. If we need "brown" material, we let our grass clippings dry and use them...also the soiled straw from the chickens.
