Feeding Wild Birds

I am kitty sitting for my neighbor for the next couple weeks, she told me to feed the birds if I wanted to but don't have to.. so I went out on the deck where the boss is kept in a metal garbage can took the lid off and grabbed the scoop, then noticed the seeds were moldy and I saw some kind of worm! grossed out I slammed the lid back on and said to myself, no way! :sick the birds can eat insects so they will be fine, it's not winter after all. The bird feeder had been full when the neighbors left so they must have just filled it, the seeds in the can didn't mold in just a day and a half, did they?? I hope the birds don't get sick from having eaten the moldy seeds!
I used to store my BOSS outside in a metal trash can. I never had mold, but one year fire ants built a nest in it. I had to dump it all. $$

I keep my birdseed in a shed that is up on blocks, using the same type of can. I've had no insect or mold issues.

We used to keep ours in a metal trash can on the covered porch but bears were getting into it so now it's kept in the garage. Never had a mold or insect problem.

Bird seed doesn't last long enough here to mold or get ants. We have several varieties, and they are all kept in 5 gallon buckets with tight lids with the screw on inserts. We did have a squirrel chew through the regular type of lid before.

My turkey momma visited today. She appears to be down one baby sadly, but the remaining trio seem a little bigger.

Humming birds caught me flat footed, thought I had another gallon ready and had none, they're out there giving me hell, buzzing all around my head taking the empties down. :D
Mine must be between nests, they haven’t been going through the latest batch as fast as I thought they would. 🤔

The consensus here is that the earthquakes caused the birds to leave. Mt. St. Helens had over 100 small earthquakes and Mt. Rainier had over 200, all about the same time the birds disappeared. I hope that means they will all come back when they think the activity is over for now. I can see that effecting the wildlife.

We live in the foothills of Mt. St. Helens and not all that far from Mt. Rainier, but not in the danger zone of either. I heard that the volcano eruption of Mt. St. Helens in the 80's covered this area in ash, but no lava or anything here.

It is so eerily quiet. At least the squirrels have started to come back. Saw 2 of the black headed grosbeaks yesterday, but no singing yet. Also saw 1 of the bald eagles. At least the eagle was singing.
