How to Become a Project Manager?

Hello everyone! I'm hoping a moderator or administrator can help me here. I'm just wondering how you can become a project manager, what exactly is it, etc. I wouldn't mind helping out and being a project manager, I just need to know how to volunteer and what exactly is involved. Thanks!
