For five chickens, a 5-gallon bucket of food and a similar sized waterer would be pleanty for them.
We've got ~2.5 dozen chickens (mostly banties) in two coops. When we go out of town for a week, each coop gets that much (plus lots of "treats" - ie over-ripe fruit, stale bread etc). We get a local kid to check a couple times, but they've never run out.
As with others, the eggs are a bigger concern with us.

ps: A cheap feeder is a 5-gallon bucket with ~6 big holes drilled in the side, right at the bottom.
