Lavender Wyandotte

I realize this thread is old but I'm going to post pics/info of my Lavender Wyandottes for reference. I purchased them locally as sexed chicks - but one turned out to be a rooster. He went to a new home last winter. The hen is still part of my flock.

Unfortunately, outside of being pretty birds, I don't have a lot of positive things to say about them. I think the birds I got were probably bred poorly, so that could be part of the problem.

I'm not sure if it's clear in the photo, but the rooster seemed to have a frayed or shredded tail (I read this happens often with lavender birds?). He had a nice personality and was never aggressive while I had him. He was a very large bird. The hen is a bit flighty - she's curious but standoffish. Both birds have a rose comb which I really like for it's unique look. The hen lays light cream colored eggs, I'd say they are medium in size.

The hen has never been a very good layer - her eggs are often thin shelled even though she has access to calcium (she's the only one with this problem) and even at her peak production she was only laying 2-3 eggs per week. She's gone on strike multiple times where she's just stopped laying for weeks at a time. I was concerned something might be wrong and have examined her multiple times but she appears healthy - I think it's just how she is? She has not laid an egg since early September BUT she did just finish her 1st molt (she's around 19 months old, it was not a hard molt). I'm hoping she might lay at least a few eggs this winter.

(the shot of the hen in their Coop is from last year, the one in the yard is a current photo)

This is definitely an old post but I have 2! I love them. They have the best personalities and have been very consistent and reliable for laying. The tail fraying is due to the lavender gene, it can make their feathers brittle. Some recommend to cross them with a black split to lavender wyandotte with strong/good plumage to add better feather quality over time.
They are by far the friendliest chickens i've ever had, right up there with buff orpingtons.

Awe, so pretty!! I'll post some new pics of my one Purple Wyandotte, the chick in this thread. Her name is Jimmy, lol. Jimmy Hendrix. She is huge and sweet, very similar to my 2 Lavender Orp hens. It takes me a few mins tell who's who honestly. She went through a fall/winter molt but has recovered nicely, feathers look great.
