New to Chickens -- Breed Suggestions?

I love Golden Comets. They are friendly,quiet,calm and lay the largest brown eggs. Also are sex-links so you can tell boys from girls at birth. My son says mom from now on only get golden comets.

A good all around hen would be a buff orpington-they are good natured, layers and cold tolerant breed. I have probably found one fault in the buffs and that is they have a tendancy to go broody alot. Breaking a dire hard broody can be pretty hard and the buffs are excellent brooders. Going broody means to desire to hatch eggs. Sometimes a hen doesn't need the rooster to go broody. If you don't want to deal with this I would suggest Plymouth barred rocks. They are good birds but don't go broody as much. The barred rocks are good layers as well. For colored eggs I would suggest EE's (nicknamed for Easter eggers) they are usually a mixed breed with Amercauna breeding.
