I suspect that my baby bantam mottled Cochin may be an oopsie-roo. I also have two baby silkies, one white and one black. I am curious as to what color their babies would be if they had any?
Finally gave in and bought an incubator. Looking for silkie eggs for my first incubation. Don't need any fancy ones, these will be spoiled pets (and hopefully snuggly lap chooks). Thank you!
Ok I gave in and finally bought two incubators. Going to buy some eggs from either ebay or MPC since I can't find any near me. I was wandering around the net and found this page http://brokeneagleranch-com.3dcartstores.com/Tips-on-Hatching-Shipped-Eggs_c_26.html is this tip better than just...
Has anyone purchased chicks from this site? How were they? How was the ratio of males to females? The free shipping is very tempting!

I am looking to get some snuggly lap chickens that like to be held and petted and visit us inside sometimes. The breeds I'm looking at right now are Silkies, Bantam Cochins, and possibly Sultans. Do Sultans make good lap chooks? Are they good with kids? Are there other breeds I should consider?
Looking for a great lap chicken breed that will do well being manhandled by an almost 6 year old and an 8mo (older when we finally get them in spring). Want them to be super snuggly and willing to visit us inside sometimes (especially in bad weather), and love being spoiled rotten. We already...
Hi! I'm looking for the names of fragrant shrubs that are safe for chickens. I have roses and lilacs. I ordered a bunch of butterfly bush from direct gardening but only one grew. Thanks!
I'm not sure where to place this so feel free to move it.
I'd like to plant a bunch of shrubs to give my chooks more hiding places (since they love the few we have). I was wondering if any of these shouldn't be planted within pecking distance of the chooks?

In February we bought three baby chicks. A Speckled Sussex, a Buff Orpington, and a Black Australorp. The Sussex and Orpington were a week or two old and the Australorp was a few days old. Since moving them outside they have been less friendly and no longer want to be touched or held. We let...
Here's the first pics of our brand new baby chicks! They're supposed to be an Orpington, Australorp, and Sussex. We bought them from Urban Farm Store in Portland.
Hello from SE Portland, Oregon! I'm looking to get chickens in the spring. Living in the city means I'm only allowed 3 hens, and renting a house on a corner lot with no privacy means I'm looking for a low-to-the-ground coop that won't stand out or attract attention. Right now I'm trying to...
We're going to be getting 3 baby chicks in the spring and I'm wondering if I really need the 250 watt? The first week or two they will be in a spare bedroom for easy and frequent access. After that we will move them to a draft-free basement...
I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times, but I'm looking for the best breed(s) for a suburban home with a preschooler. Our law only allows 3 hens. I need quiet, docile, does well in confinement. While the eggs are a nice bonus we don't eat enough of them, we just want the chickens for pets.
