Alternative for Vaseline for frostbite prevention.

It seems I’m out of Vaseline for my roosters comb. It’s dropping to freezing at night now and I’m not getting to the store for a day or two. I have bacitracin on hand, also neosporin without the pain reliever. I thought to use coconut oil but wondered if it would stick or just melt off. Any...

12 weeks 3 days old SLW mix. Cockerel??

I’ve posted my chicks at different ages. The last one was at 8 weeks and everyone believed all three of my SLW were pullets. 2 of them have rose combs. One has a straight comb so is obviously a mix. This one still concerns me. What do y’all think?

    M-F? 8 weeks 2 days old. SLW & SS

I’ve raised chicks from my hens sitting on them. i’ve usually been correct in my guesses for their gender. I’ve never brought chicks in and stuck them under a hen. So I really don’t know what to look for with these two breeds. I’m not familiar with them as chicks. Any guesses?

    Giving in to poison …

Rats!! Ok, I have never allowed food inside the coop. I have never left feeders in the run once the flock is in bed. I remove water also. The whole coop and run are covered with 1/2 inch hardware cloth with apron. I have tried building bucket traps, even paid for one. Caught 2 mice in 4 months...

    Gender. GAME ON!

This wa last night and this morning when Peaches and her brood are first released to join the flock at 32 days old. 3 brown are Speckled Sussex. 3 black and white are SLW. The end part might have the best views. Have fun!

    Peaches and her (adopted) babies!

When Peaches clutch all proved to be duds I snuck 3 SLW and 3 Speckled Sussex under her. She’s a super protective mama and this is the closest she has ever allowed me!

Does coloring on chicks mean anything?

Peaches brood is 6 days old. They are supposed to be 3 Speckled Sussex and 3 Silver Laced Wyandotte. Any thoughts on their breed, or gender?

I’ve given it droplets of nutradrench and it’s noisy. I’m holding it in my bra to keep warm. It crawls up me but can’t stand in the box. Help!

Is mama going to reject them? (Video)

Peaches sat on a clutch for 24 days with no signs of hatching. Last night I took them away, replaced them with 2 fake eggs, and drove like Speed Racer to my favorite breeder for 4 chicks she had hatched that morning. The breeder is sneaky and popped 6! chicks into the box. 😃 We put them under...

To candle or not to candle. That is the question.

OK, so in another thread, I talked about how Miss Peaches is sitting on eggs, even though she’s only eight months old. I gave in and let her sit on eggs, she has 8. That’s an awful lot for little tiny her but she continues to sit and spread her self thin over them lol. But my question now is...

    She’s too young!

Peaches is eight months old. Last week she was acting a little broody, but I was able to quit her just by removing her from the nest and collecting all the eggs. Yesterday I saw her in a nest and apparently she laid an egg. But then she was fluffed up and refused to come out. And of course, the...

I lost my sweet singer Doris.

Doris, my Blue Marans passed today. She was 3 years 7 months old. She was my largest hen, laid beautiful deep chocolate brown eggs, hatched my first brood of chicks (and let me play with them), and would jump up in front of my face to sing with me as I tidied the coop. She was my friend. Her...

    Chickens love is real

So my big boy, Albert, has a boo boo toe. I was checking it tonight to see if it needs further treatment when my Rosie was just so happy to see me she couldn't help herself she flew and perched on top of Albert. He's such a patient and good boy!

    Black toe, wounded knee!

Warning, long description of problem and treatments to this point. Also Warning, photos are gross. Not great photos but my subject doesn’t care for cameras. I am so upset with myself! I know chickens don’t let on when they aren’t feeling well. I catch things by paying attention. Bumblefoot...

NJ Banty cockerel needs a home

Fitzroy is 6 months old from a father that is White Frizzle Cochin Bantam X Buff Brahma Bantam and unknown but standard mother. He exhibits the Brahma Bantam physical traits just like his father. He has been a good boy and is generally polite with the ladies, properly dancing and tidbitting for...

    Separated for 24 hours!???

Last night I found my bantam rooster very bloody, then saw that his 6 month old son (almost a clone of daddy) was also bloodied. Obviously they had thier first battle. Last battle if I can help it, but that’s not the subject of my question. After cleaning the blood off of them both as best I...

    Ratshot poison

Does anyone have experience with this product around chickens ? The claim is that a chicken would have to eat its own weight in this poison to kill it. https://www.dineachook.com.au/blog/how-to-get-rid-of-rats-in-the-chicken-coop/

Is this cockerel doing what I think he’s doing?

I have never seen this happen before. So I am curious. Over time I’ve had my hands lay eggs and hatch them and I’ve had a total of seven males hatched over time. This one in this cage is one of two I have outside of my regular flock member roosters. This is the first time I’ve seen one do this...

    Collecting eggs for broody

:jumpy:jumpy:jumpyI’m looking forward to someone becoming broody this spring. I want to chose which eggs she sits on especially since I don’t want another staggard hatching like I had in august. With this unseasonably warm weather in northwest nj (freeze snap today and tomorrow then back to 40s...
