A friend of mine found this beauty among their (late) grandmother's belonging. She was clearly a beloved bird-- what was she? Hard to tell from the picture, but she is bantam sized.
Breed: silver laced Wyandotte
Age: unknown, but bare minimum of two and likely much older.
Has not laid since May, no prior history known.
So my old drop off hen from this thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/ethel-needs-some-tlc.1542945/
has declined rapidly. Yesterday I decided...
I have a lovely SLW that showed up at my coop earlier this summer.
Due to the nature of her arrival, I don't know much about her-- she was owned by an elderly lady who has since passed. I assume she is older.
Since the beginning, she has had the hardest adjustment, and lately I noticed she...
So about 2 weeks ago I got 4 basement bargain barred rocks from TSC, and since the minimum chick purchase in my state is 6, I picked 1 each from the other 2 bins: "assorted bantams", and "black sex links"
Now. The white chick was easily twice the size of the other bantams, and the only white...
I have packages and packages of beef and pork liver taking up space in my freezer. I swear there was a rumor going around that feeding liver to EEs made the egg color pop, but I cannot for the life of my find that thread. How do you feed it? Chop it up and cook it? Raw? How much is good for them?
I had ordered 3 EEs this spring, 2 females and a male. Lost one day after arrival.
Of the remaining two, I think one is a hen for sure, but this one is keeping me guessing! What do we think of Maybe Gracelyn? Hen or roo?
As an added bonus, I think I am right that Betsy is a girl, do we agree?
I received 18 chicks from Ideal Hatchery on 5/19, hatched on 5/17, and noted this one immediately. She was lethargic, and so so small. I do not know what breed she is-- I ordered an assortment of chicks including a "rare breed hatchery choice". She could be that one, but I also ordered EEs and...
I have 36, count 'em, 36 chicks in my spare room right now!
Next week I am going to transition them all outside, they will be split up into two coops. 10 of them will he going to my main coop, where my free ranging flock of about 25 is. There is a separate pen in the back, and I plan to keep...
Between the arrival of chicks by post, and hatching my own for the first time ever, I expected all my new arrivals would be tiny. However, upon letting out my flock this morning, I noticed an unfamiliar face at the door. I have no clue what kind of chicken this red bird is, but I am very sure...
I have my first-ever batch if eggs in the incubator, 18 polish crested eggs. They are starting to hatch a day early, and I am concerned-- I took this photo approximately 6 hours ago, there are at least 5 eggs at this stage of hatching, I can hear chicks peeping, but they don't seem to be making...
I'm planning to hatch some eggs from this buff laced polish rooster crossed over the pictured hens-- a buff laced polish, a white crested blue polish, a (not pictured) red crested red polish, and the smokey gray and the black polish.
I'm just generally curious what my colors might look like...
As the title says, I had a terrible fox attack in broad daylight this morning. 4 birds are dead, and 3 are injured.
Spike-- Polish rooster, 18 months old. Bloody foot and limping, otherwise unharmed
Hossea-- polish rooster, 18 months old, lethargic, purple face, multiple puncture wounds on his...
11 weeks old, polish crested X cream legbar, very squirmy.
Bonus chick 1: 11 week polish I am 87% sure is a girl
Bonus chick 2: this totally handsome 100% boy
Help! Nardole the Brave has a mystery going on, and I really need some help!
He is a 2 year old Polish crested rooster, and has a swelling on the back/side of his neck down towards his crop.
I am ashamed to say I don't know how long it's been there. He has been a little poorly and rough for...
My dear white polish crested rooster, 18 months old, has become very ill very fast. He was crowing and behaving normally yesterday, today he is lethargic, weak, and not interested in much. He is walking on his hocks, but mostly just lying in the corner.
What I have done: looked him over for...
I hatched out 7 chicks from my own birds this year, and Inam just idly wondering what they might look like when grown.
The parents: 3 eggs were from my gold laced wyandotte, 1 egg from a silver laced wyandotte, one from my EE, all crossed with my Black sex link x Lavender orpington roo...
I have an egg, due to hatch. I can hear the chick moving and chirping, but the hen has abandoned the nest. I do not have nor can I procure an incubator, what can I do??? The rest of the chicks hatched yesterday and mom seems preoccupied with them and not inclined to take care of this one
On Tuesday I picked up some chicks that were a few days old already. As is my usual custom, I hand fed a mash of chick food and egg yolk once a day for a few days to give everyone a boost.
I stopped on Saturday, and yesterday one chick was noticeably lethargic.
A closer examination revealed...
I am working on getting this ancient monster hauled over to my house. It hasn't been used in 20+ years, and needs some serious tlc.
Where should I start??
It is roughly 14x8 in the big room, 6x8 in the small room, and the roost and boxes are not included in those dimensions. Insulated roof and...
