Are they getting plenty water, & layena? They will not lay well without. It would be very unusual for red sex links not to be laying. Have you ruled out predators that might be getting the eggs? At a year old I would think they would be laying well.
Dark legged looks like a French copper Mayan, you have an Easter egger or Americauna, and Dominque it appears to me. All really good ones for eggs. My Dominique looks like the one with yellow legs, Mayan has the dark legs, and the Easter egger has the green legs.
I had mine in the bath tub with doggy pads til about 2 weeks then in the outside coop with heat lamps until they feathered out. I also tarp with bungee cords to avoid rain and wind. Didn't lose any of the 14. They are 2 months now.
If you order from a hatchery, like McMurray, minimum is 25, I believe; if you order from other places, sometimes they have a minimum order, say tractor supply won't let you purchase less than 6. Keep receipts & take pics of any you lose for free replacement., otherwise you will be out of luck...
I have not seen them I just started off doing that to prevent getting them in the first place. I have a lot of wild birds that eat from my chicken area as well, and they all get DE every so often, if they decide they to eat here. I do it regularly every few months. Maybe I have been lucky...
I haven't posted in a long time, but concerning parasites in chickens, I use DE (Diathimatious Earth) (sp)....I have a 50# bag and I use it to sprinkle for mites & I also add to their feed and put water in their feed to make sure they eat it. I worms them and keeps the mites away. I also put...
Where are you? Looks like in PA..or the NE. Coop looks like adequate size for the chickens you are planning on housing. I don't know if you have looked into this, but have you checked your local 'craigslist' for some lumber/supplies? Sometimes people have stuff posted..for free with your...
I agree. This was my first flock so I wanted to try different types to see which ones I liked the best. All the ones I picked were supposed to be docile, winter hearty, and do well in confinement, but no matter what you will always have a pecking order. I enjoy all my chickens, however, my...
This is my favorite chicken. I only got one because she wasn't a 'pure bred', however, I wouldn't think twice about getting a whole flock of these for laying. They are very docile, have wonderful personalities, they are dual purpose. They lay large light brown eggs. Winter hearty; had mine...
I have 4 of these girls and I love their appearance. I live in WA state and heard they were good in confinement and in cold areas and they have proven to be that as well as good layers throughout the winter, if you keep them warm and a light in their confined space all winter. My hens lay from...
I love my welsummers. They are really good hens and they lay beautiful dark brown eggs. They are docile and other breeds have a tendency to pick on them in confinement. Great foragers and lovely.
I have some of these and I have been happy with them. I actually had the perfect flock; 1 was broody, the others were not. The rooster beautiful and protective. Light brown eggs, winter hearty. I'd recommend if you purchase for a confined space, buy all the same breed, I've heard there is...
I live in the 'city' and we are not supposed to have roosters. Out of my flock, one of my pullets actually was a 'rooster', so my 92 year old neighbor across the street that lives in the county and can have as many chickens as he wants took my rooster. He had no rooster, but wanted one, and he...
I am a retired nurse; I enjoy gardening, canning, making homemade wine & I love my chickens. This is my first flock. I have Black Australorps, Red Sex Links, Ameraucanas & Welsummers. I have 1 double yoker on a regular basis. When I clean out the 'coop', I use the clean out for mulch for my...
My girlfriend here in Washington state got a late start on purchase of her chicks and hers started laying a couple of weeks ago. If they are due to start, say 18-22 weeks, you can start feeding layer food and they should start laying. I was really surprised that hers started laying this late...
