Brown shed is the "Cattie Shack" for the mouse control. Third pic is the "Quack Shack" for the Indian Runners . Green topped is Small coop/run where new birds go . Large coop/run (4th pic) last two pics are of the inside of large coop/run . As we learn we have modified our set up to get to this...
Not been active here in a while
Health challenges have got in the way of many things for a couple of years , but having the birds to tend to keeps you going . Were able to make some upgrades to the "free run" and indoor run areas . Plus added electric fence to the perimeter and barn kittens now...
Now if you can make it move every so often , might just work . Animals get use to things that are stationary. Oh ya pee on its pants , the smell of a larger pred. (man) helps keep a lot of them away .
They grow faster than chicken and because they walk upright need a taller brooder . Water and food has to be continually raised as they grow .It is instinctive for them to try and jump in any water they find including there drinking bowl . I found taking them out of there brooder and let them...
Large white egggs . They have a small pool as of this year and a small tub to bath in on nice days in winter . In the spring we will be finishing the big pond .

Straw only for duck coop with a sprinkle of DE. "Fluff "and stir it up a lot or let the chicken do it for you . They are poop machines . Replace as needed.

I have Indian Runner ducks and chickens . They each have there own coop and runs but share free range area . For the most part they get along now . The Chickens come and mingle with the duck in there run often . The hardest part is keeping enough fresh open water for them to drink . They drink...
The feeder is full and in use .But this drawing should help . The dotted line is a funnel up side down with the tip plugged so it doesn't fill up . This will reduce a little what it can hold but make it flow better . When installed on the bottom there should be about an 1" to an 1.5" between the...
We are first year chicken and runner duck care givers . After reading as much as I could on the subject last winter we embarked on this adventure . Here is what we have done . Fenced off our veg garden area (aprox. 100' x 150' ) . This is there free range area with vulnerable plant areas fenced...
How close are your neighbours ?? Our neighbours got "miniature" pigs this year 100 - 150 lbs now . All is great until they get upset . Then you and all your neighbours with in a 1 mile radius will know about it . The squeal they make is ear piercing . Something to keep in mind if you have...
Great article . I have question for those with many winter care under there belts . The heated water we got says for indoor use only but I understand and get why you don't want to keep the water in the coop in the winter due to the additional dampness it will provide . Any ideas how I can keep...
Put a steeper cone in it and hang it . Hanging will allow the chickens to "shake it" for you as they peck away at the food . Since I started with chicken and ducks this year I made my own feeders and waters . I have worked and reworked them several times to get the bugs out and these are some...
Does it have a cone in the bottom of it or flat bottom ? Crumb consists of different size particles that will pack under the weight of the feed above . A flat bottom will cause the feed to lock up and not flow as well if not pellets . If it is flat bottom try sticking a upside down funnel (put...
All our girls have coloured leg bands to identify them . So each name is the colour of the band , Miss Red , Miss Blue , Miss Green ....... Then there is Mister Man Harold .
Update on progress .
Built a second Coop and Run same as the other an a coop made from old insulated garage door panels . They are beside each other . Fenced in a large area around the veg gardens for free ranging . We started with 3 Runners and recently added 2 more of the same age giving us 2...
