How many eggs is everybody getting?

I'm still fairly inexperienced on chickens. My 3 girls are almost 2 yrs old. They havent layed an egg in over a month. I'm south of Houston. Temps have been varying but it hasnt gotten very cold yet this winter. We're getting roughly 11 hrs of daylight right now. So is this normal for them to...

Wanting to start raising backyard chickens

Welcome. We got chickens this past Easter on a whim and didnt know a thing about raising them. This website helped me greatly and my birds are all doing well. And I agree, they are pets to us. Each have their own distinct behavior.

    Finally.... EGGS!

One of my other hens laid her first egg on Friday right at 23 weeks. Bam, first one right in the nesting box. Must have learned from the sex link that was already laying. My only remaining bird that has not laid yet started showing signs yesterday that she is close. I bet within a few days...

    Finally.... EGGS!

Well I changed up the roost bar to match the one they use out in the run. I think this utilizes the interior space better. Placed them in there at night this weekend and they are all roosting on the new bar. I also placed a white egg in each of the boxes and yesterday morning my sex link had...

    Finally.... EGGS!

Yes I have buried some wire around the perimeter. The coop has 10.5 sq ft inside, not counting the 3 nest boxes. Not quite 4 ft per bird but not terrible small either. That's a good idea about removing the roost bar from the run. I think I'll try that. And yes, I put a store bought white egg...

    Finally.... EGGS!

My girls finally started laying eggs! I have 1 black sexlink and 2 production reds that are right at 21 weeks and got our first egg this past Sunday, and one every day since. I believe it is only the sex link that is laying right now, and she has gotten way more friendly since she started. This...

A few questions about my flock

Update - I found a home for my cockerel, so he is gone. This is good because I think my coop is the perfect size for 3 birds. The pullets are now almost 16 weeks old. I leave the coop main door open at all times so they can go out to the run whenever they want. I've noticed lately that they...

Free Gold Laced Cochin cockerel (Houston area)

I got 4 baby chicks last Easter and one turned out to be a cockerel. I have no need for him, so trying to find him a home before I have to cull. Bob is calm and good around his girls. He is roughly 12 weeks old. I'm located 30 minutes south of Houston if anyone wants him. I'll drive to meet you...

A few questions about my flock

I had already raised the roost bars about 2.5 inches from how they originally came. I guess I'll need to raise them even higher, according to the link rosemarythyme provided. Thanks again for the replies.

A few questions about my flock

Thank y'all for the replies! This is really helpful. Ridgerunner, to answer your question about where do they sleep now, I'd say sometimes they roost and sometimes they are in the corner on the coop floor. Honestly I'll have to pay more attention to that as I don't bother them much at night...

A few questions about my flock

I'm pretty new at this, so I have a few basic questions about my small flock. My birds are about 10 weeks old now. I have (1) black sex-link pullet, (2) production red pullets, and (1) golden laced cochin cockerel. When can I expect the females to start laying? I've read that the sex-links...

    Updated pics of my flock

Here's some update pics of my small flock of 4 birds. Are y'all seeing any other cockerels other than the cochin? Just double checking. I thought my 2 reds were Sex-links but someone posted that they look more like production reds when I posted pics a week ago. They are right at 8 weeks old now...

I need some advice before I buy a coop.

That is not near enough room for 10 chickens. I just went through this same thing. None of the store bought pre made coops are big enough for 10 chickens. They may say they are on the box, but they are not.

My birds. Unsure if one is a boy or girl?

Here's some updated pics. Almost 8 weeks old now and are growing fast. Are y'all still thinking the red ones are Production Reds? Also, do you see any other cockerels other than the Gold Laced Cochin?

Talk me off the Ledge... $2000 for a chicken coop!

I've got about $1,100 in mine. I bought the coop and small run for around $600. Then quickly realized the run was too small so I added an 8' x 8' additional run. All in all with the coop, wood for run addition, hardware cloth and paint I'm a little over $1k. Here's a few pics, but I'm still...

My birds. Unsure if one is a boy or girl?

I just really dont think it's a good idea to keep him. We are first time chicken owners with zero experience. Everything I read on here say roosters can be a challenge, even more so for newbies. And I have no interest in hatching and raising baby chicks. Plus I only have 3 hens. That's not...

My birds. Unsure if one is a boy or girl?

Now I'm not sure what to do? This is our first time with chickens, but I don't think I want a rooster. But we've had them since they were only a few days old so I don't really want to get rid of him either. They are currently about 7 weeks old. What are my options here? I don't really know how...
