I love borage. The seeds I planted in the tomato bed never sprouted, but the ones I planted with the watermelon did!
They're the plants at the top of this photo.
First daylily bloom this morning!
Figs...will I get some before the raccoons?
Hydrangea
Yesterday was a busy day.
I potted...
They MUST be girls, right?
:fl
I let everyone out of the brooders this morning. Here's Rahab with her bunch soaking up some morning sun.
Rahab actually went after one of the Dominiques this morning, it got too close. Good.
Tamar is still low gal in the pecking order, but her chicks are...
You may recall Little Chick, one of two chicks in a staggered hatch back in April? He was the one pecked and left for dead on day two, again on day three. I gave him B Complex and E from a syringe a couple times. He would get lost, Martha had to go back and find him. He cried when he got left...
Hannah's comb didn't used to look like that.
From December, all three Sussex:
L-R Rahab, Hannah, Martha
To identify the Dominiques I cheat, I look at the leg rings. Except Lydia, she makes the most endearing nasal "Waaaaw" sound as if she's disappointed.
Three, broke one, found another, so four... but noticed one slightly covered with straw in a hard-to-reach location, five...broke it trying to get it.
So 5...3 made it to the egg tray. The one that was hidden might have been from yesterday.
Baby chicks got scrambled eggs for dinner.
Sure are!
LC, Limey, Blue, Purple, Dom X
Two were already on the A-frame roost when I checked a few minutes ago. LC was roosting on the edge of the wheelbarrow, Limey and Dom X were next to Martha. She kept pecking them and they kept squealing. I moved them to the A-frame.
It appears Martha...
Done!
The cattle panel pieces were long, but not very wide.
I bent them flat, and took the shorter one up on the porch. It fit just below the roof/ceiling. I placed it close to the porch support, the end on the porch slightly at an angle, so it was leaning towards the railing.
I zip-tied the...
Today:
Neither Rahab nor Tamar are showing the fierce devotion to motherhood that Martha did.
Today I let both broodies out with their chicks while I observed.
One of the Sussex, Hannah, chased Tamar away from her chicks, and at one point climbed on top of Tamar and scratched...
Seriously, do you have any outdoor cats?
I have two that adopted me as giver of good food. I saw one of them catch and kill a squirrel. They keep the rodent population down.
I wasn't prepared for two broodies, I only had one chick feeder, and my galvanized metal waterer base rusted. Today I went to a hardware/farm store and got a chick waterer base and a chick feeder base. I bought a second waterer base at TSC, but all they had were bases with a flower design...
I love aquariums. The one in Chicago was really good, but the local smaller aquariums are fun as well. There's one in Pine Knoll Shores in NC that I have been to several times.
