Had a dozen more Narragansett poults hatch out last week. And a few days ago I found a Narragansett hen that has been hiding on a clutch of eggs. I have no idea when they are due to hatch.
I've got Bresse chicken and helmeted guinea fowl eggs hatching this weekend, and Narragansett turkey eggs due to hatch on the 4th. A few days ago I found one of my Narragansett turkey hens hidden on a clutch of eggs and have no idea when those are due to hatch. And I just set 10 more turkey eggs...
Piper is setting on eight Narragansett turkey eggs, due to hatch May 6th. I moved her and her adopted eggs into a secure cage (a spare XL indoor bunny / guinea pig cage) in a corner of the barn so the other girls won't be harassing her by trying to lay in her nest or attempting to steal her...
Put together two big kiddie pools to make a brooder within a matter of minutes for the newest batch of chicks. Cheap, quick, and easy to move, clean and disinfect. And the babies have room to grow. The top pool is held in place over the bottom pool by 4 small screws which can be removed in just...
Looks like we've ended up with 37 chicks this round. Found one that had dried in its shell (looked like a grey puff ball had exploded inside the egg), but within a couple hours of me helping it out, it was difficult to tell it apart from it's hatchmates. 😊
Though after losing power for a day...
Peeked in on the eggs in the old Sportsman this evening and we have chicks hatching! :yesss:
I opened it only very briefly...but it was enough to see both chicks and empty shells of various colour English Orpingtons, BCM, at least two of the Lavender Ams and at least one Bresse.
Candled the eggs in the Sportsman before putting them on lockdown today. The BCM eggs were just a bit too dark for me to candle in the room I was in at the time, so I just put those all on lockdown. Of all the remaining eggs, 18 were not viable (several were simply clear). Ended up with 68 eggs...
Thank you 😊
Her name is Piper. I have three Silkie x Cochin Bantams that I hatched out from bonus eggs I got from another local farm. Though not much for laying (still, they do their part), they are awesome little brood hens and fierce little mommas. And I never have to worry about the power...
Set 8 ouf our Narragansett turkey eggs under a broody Silkie-Cochin bantam yesterday just after the eclipse passed. She is viciously protective of those eggs today. If all goes well, we should have turkey poults hatching May 6th. 🦃🙂
I finally broke down and started up the old Sportsman. So far I've got English Orpingtons (Silver Laced, Chocolate, Blue/Black Mottled, and BBS), as well as BCMs, Lavender Ameraucana, Bresse (from 3 different pens), Mille Fleur D'Uccle, and Frizzle Silkie (only two have FS eggs though, so...
