A bit late but better later than never,
This pic is from Snowy's first day of life, before we stuck it behind our broody, Yuki :).
Snowy is feathering out quickly,
and has white wing feathers and a little stubby white tail now!
Holy crap, there was a GIGANTIC toad chilling by the maternity coop,
I didn't want it to freak out Gracie or her chicks so I poked it to move it along,
Gracie saw it, spread out her wings, puffed up, and starting growling!
The toad was nearly as big as her, I couldn't stop laughing :lau
I got it...
That's actually something I'm now wondering about, but if it's a genetic thing it'd be from the rooster- last time she hatched the chick that just up and died was hers, this time it was the only frizzled chick from a different genetic mother; she hatched one from her own egg, three from the...
Thank you;
it's not so hard as the last time she hatched, she lost both babies then,
one to a snake and one just flopped over dead, that was horrible, she was making
a very sad screaming sound looking for her chicks. She got over it eventually,
and then went broody again just two months after...
I would have tried to make a video this morning, but one of Gracie's four babies was found dead :( no idea how or why, it was just fine yesterday, no marks, no symptoms of anything on any of them. Ugh, just one of those things that happens with chicks I guess, but why did it have to be the...
Thank you so much! It took us so long to build, and we did it all ourselves,
just with a little help with the coop from my uncle, so I'm really proud of it!
I love our girls (and boys) and want the best set-up possible for them.
We free range them a couple hours each evening, they love running...
Evening Bob, just thought you might appreciate this video :)
Excuse the bad camera focus halfway in,
plus I accidentally covered the mic for a few sec.
The chickens have decided the space between the wood panel
and Yuki's cage is a prime sitting and chatting / dirt bathing spot,
they're in...
It worked! She accepted it, lets it hop on her back, called it to the food bowl I set directly in front of her, etc :clap And thanks for giving me your experience, in the cage in the run they can see and be seen by the other chickens, so it should really help them get along when they can...
SO, we got everything set up in the run, the cage is secure, has food, water, shavings, and a nest box; we carried Yuki (the perpetual broody) INSIDE the nest box, set it down in the cage, then waited a minute. Then we stuck the chick down near her tail. Yuki woke up, pecked behind herself a few...
Definitely helps some, gives me some ideas, thanks!
I have a 2x4ft dog cage I could stick under the sheltered part of the run for the first week or two, as long as I do something near the bottom so the chick can't slip through the bars.
That should at least help get everyone used to the new...
Hey Bob, serious question really fast: What problems, if any, did you have with your girl raising her chicks in the general coop area? I ask because I had an egg unexpectedly hatch DAYS after the others did, and the mom doesn't want the chick; it's too much younger and too different looking...
I just gotta say, I love Aurora's adorable whiskery cheek puffs :D
Your Phyllis reminds me of my PomPom, same breed but different coloring!
This will sound weird, but I also love the weeds that grow up where you are!
Here in Florida the weeds are either ugly, spiky, viney, invasive, or all of...
Thanks :D Here's your update for now, you can finally see all four chicks! Lol
I gave them scrambled eggs today, mommy was ecstatic, chicks were cautious, haha.
They take a short bit to get used to new things, mommy helps speed that up.
They are so incredibly tiny, bantam chicks are just so...
Hey Bob, my Old English Game Bantam, Gracie, just had chicks hatch!
I love watching the little fluffers navigate the world with their momma, it's too cute :).
I'm glad your chicks are doing good, love reading your updates!
Cute chicks! Glad your hen gets to experience being a momma :). It's so fun to watch! I have a broody right now, two more weeks to go, five eggs total; excited to have a bunch of bantam babies running around!
