I don't believe one can control egg laying with diet and keep the hen healthy. What one can do if ones hens go broody is let them sit for three days so their egg laying cycle switches off. Of course one has to deal with making them unbroody and there is lots of advice on how to do this and lots...

One and a half hours this morning and three this afternoon. Warmish while the sun was out. The rescued chick isn't learning at the speed of the others. It's that noticable that if these were dawn to dusk rangers the chick would probably be dead by now. The chicks loses easy contact with mother...

An hour this morning and four hours this afternoon. It stayed dry and mainly cloudy at around 14C. There is something about this particular area that makes a good dustbath. Each year this area, once I've weeded gets dug out by the chickens for dust bathing. I makes small compost piles in the...

I missed the bus and then fell asleep on the train ending up at Temple Meads the main Bristol train station. I'm normally home by 10pm if I don't stop anywhere on route. No it isn't but I would expect say a couple of fox cubs fighting to make more randon damage. The damage is just to the...

30th May. Mostly dry with some sunshine. I didn't get home until 11pm. Someone did this to my onions.

I agree. But, we should be able to cater for that with home made feeds.

Well, there's your proof combined with the feeds they produce. Doesn't get much simpler than commercial feed so I guess they don't really understand nutrition either.:p Steady!:lol: Erm, :p Yeah well. You can't be a farmer unless you've got a farm goes down like a lead balloon on this...

That's Major in the picture. He was the first of the Catalonian males I became friendly with. Major and the farm dog Blacky were the only brains on the property.

I looked at Fret's most recent chicks and saw three boys and one girl for a moment.:lol: With a bit of an expansion and of course two or more going broody, statistics say I should have enough males to eat chicken a couple of times a month; small portions naturally.:D

The Sandman got me before I could post pictures last night. https://sleepopolis.com/education/sleep-myths-the-sandman/ Took them out onto the field for the first time in eleven days. The chicks are big enough to just about cope with the vegitation and Fret didn't take them far.

If a hen hatches chicks in a location other than the coop/s she lives in then at some point, usually around when the hen stops mothering the chicks, she introduces them to the other chickens she lives with by returning to the tribe coop with the chicks and claiming her place and the chicks place...

I've followed most of the feed debates. I agree, Perris does well in raising awareness and I'm pretty sure there are people now trying something similar who wouldn't have done prior to reading Perris's article. Thread debates with two entrenched sides isn't likely to prove productive. It's worth...

I mentioned in my roster article how I found grooming the roosters, if they would let me, a very usefull way of establishing trust. I stroke Henry while he's on the roost bare least thing before closing them in for the night. Sometimes he doesn't even pull his head out from under his wing...

I've had two fall in a stone washing tub the ducks used. One I didn't find in time and she died the other survived once I had dried her out.

This batch of chicks are different in their behaviour towards me than the last that pair Fret hatched. This could be because Fret is a lot more trusting, to the point of giving me a gentle warning peck, rather than immediately moving off with the chicks or going full battle order.:p It's more...
