True, but I haven't gotten more than 15 miles from where I grew up.
We got lucky. Son moved back for 6 months after a break up. Daughter has been on her own ever since graduating.
I remember when kids graduated high school and either got a job, joined the service or went to college and basically moved out of their parents' house.
When I entered third grade we were taken from a 2 room school house to a consolidated school. First day, new school, new classmates - teacher left the room - I was picked up and stuffed butt first into the trash can. Just as the teacher returned I tipped the can and sprawled out on the floor...
I remember traveling the country roads on my bike looking for discarded bottles. That nickel per was better than shoveling chicken crap for a quarter an hour.
Remember Dad listening to Amos and Andy and Jackie Gleason on the large living room radio. Remember when we got the first television in our small town and all the kids would gather to watch it while I was outside doing 'something'.
I remember when if the police caught you in a minor transgression they warned you and threatened to tell your parents if you were caught again. Happened to a friend.
I do too. I had just finished taking a finals in a forestry course - went out to see the Princess who worked in that building, and she told me - ran back to the test room and caused a major disruption when I gave everyone the news.
I remember and will never forget/forgive 9/11
I remember late night phone calls, my mother opening the cellar door, my father backing the Studebaker station wagon into the drive and carrying a shrouded 'body' into the cellar. I remember venison steak the next night. :p
$4,800/year base pay - worked every bit of overtime possible - the Princess was a 'stay at home' mom - rent was $65/monthly - heat and electricity included.
