I think Spitzhaubens will do just fine in TX. Mine were fine in all the triple digit temps we’ve had, and they were fine in the polar vortex with negative double digit temps. My originals came from Cackle Hatchery. We live close enuf that we drove there to pick them up. We are on our 3rd...

I love it! I have a Serama question for you—do yours have to live indoors in winter?

I’m thinking that with the rising egg prices, it would be a good idea to increase the flock. I’d let one of the broodies in the spring hatch out some chicks. The Sprite girls crossed with the Spitz rooster will have chicks that are 3/4 Spitzhauben. Spritezzhauben‘s. I’m curious how that...

I love it! The Sprites are lovely, super smart, a perfect size, and great layers. But 2 of the 5 hens are compulsive broodies like their Sebright mom. Every month, like clockwork. The Sprite cockerels were crazy and aggressive, I have kept none. Our Sebright Moonshine is 6 yrs old. Her...

Mine don’t lay in the winter, but if yours is a pullet, she’s at point of lay for sure. However, days may be too short and she may wait till spring. Do any of the rest of you Spitz owners get winter eggs?

Are you sure that’s from a Spitzhauben? They lay white eggs.

I think they should be spiky and that at this age, you wouldn’t tell by their crests. @Alaskan has chamois, maybe could post some new pics?

The BYC critter Halloweencostume contest this year includes all animals, not just chickens. 🎃 https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/bycs-2022-spooktacular-halloween-hatch-along-—critter-halloween-costume-contest.1551095/ Margarita Poofcrest dressed up for her photo shoot today.

Very pretty! I guessing they are pullets, because at 9 weeks, the boys’ wattles become noticeable and are red.

I love it! They usually have a dress-up-your chicken contest here on BYC for halloween. It hasn’t been announced yet, but should be soon. I always enter….here’s little Moonshine last year. She doesn’t mind these things if it means getting a bunch of sunflower seeds…

I have a broody Spitzhauben! This is 2 yr old Nadine, my first Spitz ever to go broody. Currently in the basement in broody jail.

This is Violetta, one of our Sprights (half Spitz) in the basement broody jail for the 3rd time this year. She hatched one egg last year, and chick was a cockerel. (Spitzhauben). She wants to be a mama again so badly but we don’t want more chickens at this time....especially more boys. The...
