If you can't sell or re-home him, I would. We had some beautiful boys who were rude and we were able to re-home/sell. To me a peaceful flock is more important than a beautiful boy. That is just my opinion. Someone else might rather just have him solely for his type. Good luck and definatly...
Araucana's are notorious for not being good at fertilization. We started with 12 eggs and hatched two. When I candled at 8 days we culled about half for lack of development (i.e. being infertile). Where are you located? If you simply want colored eggs, there are probably other breeds that...
Well, most days someone is home. My hubby is retired and I work part time. We have a totaly enclosed "aviary" (we call it) attached to the coop and they can come & go in it when they get up in the mornings and when we do leave them totaly closed in if we are gone overnight. So far, knock on...
We really aren't looking at doing anything big time, just county fair and it is small. She went last year and did well. Most days there is someone home most of the day. My hubby is retired and does volunteer work and I only work two days a week. I am torn between their safety and their...
I was afraid you would say that. I really don't want to clip her at all but it would be for her own safety. The other option is making the fence taller and my hubby is already grumbling about all my coop alterations.
Beautiful Pics!!!! All kinds of colors! Beautiful tufts and clean and lovely rumpless butts!
I have a questions for all you experts out there: Do you get downgraded when showing birds that have clipped wings?
I ask because my daughter wants to show (and has shown before) at the county...
It is my understanding that you do not have to begin with show quality stock but the closer your first birds are to APA standards the shorter the trip, i.e. less generations before getting great birds. You can begin with show birds if you have the cash on hand. There are always people willing...
I am not experienced enough with different breeds to help out much. I do know Araucanas come in a variety of colors. It seems like I remember hearing of another breed that is primarily rumpless as well but I could just be dreaming that.
Have you posted on Breeds, Genetics & showing? You can...
The brown chipmonk chicks are the Araucanas. These are at 5 days.
This is at 2 weeks. If you blow up the photo you will see the Favorelle (whose butt is in the photo) is developing a tail and the Araucana is not. Hope this helps Lobzi.
I would say the mix is very possible. The Araucana (prefered in the U.S.) doesn't even have a tail bone (as I understand it).
Well, I was trying to down load a couple pics for you but for soome reason they won't load. I'll try later. By two weeks they have no tail development at all where...
We got Araucana, Favorelle, Houdan and silkie. Unfortunatly of the 12 Araucanas only 2 hatched. It was one boy and one girl. Again, unfortunatly we had to sell the male as he was a little too agressive and we had roo overload in a mixed flock. He was a beauty though even if he had a georgous...
When we went up to get our eggs at UofA we arranged to have a tour of their bird pens. When we went in I looked down the hall and there was a NN that had gotten out of its pen and it was stareing us down. I was surprised at how large it was ( and even more frightening in person.) Also the pen...
I am not a showing expert, but I think she is beautiful! Hopefully some of the experts will chime in for you. I am not sure if the slate legs are correct for all feather colors or not. I believe it was discussed somewhere on this thread but no idea where. Her tufts are fabulous!!
