I had the same thing happen when I started raising Araucana... Because they don't have a tail bone, and lots of butt fluff, breeding is a challenge for these birds. It helps a whole lot of you trim the fluff immediately around the vent and any cushion/saddle feathers that may block the vent area.
This is my trio from Colorado: a double tufted roo and two c/f pullets:
This guy is interested in the roosters' business! - The sheep love the chickens and literally beg for their attention by walking up very slowly with their heads held low. Then they stand quietly and wait to see if...
Is she splash or blue wheaten? If your cockerel is a BBR, the splash could make a huge difference in the color of your chicks - not to say they won't be cute and colorful, but they won't fit into a specific color variety - beautiful yard art
To breed tails out of your flock, just remove the chicks that develop tails..... some of your chicks should be rumpless, keep those for future breeding....
I can't remember the formulas for chick rates, but I think you would get something like 50% (or is it 25%?) hatch rate, and all the chicks...
Right, yes he does look similar... I only saw pics of him, but the FB page said something about having breeding stock available in this color variety He did have trios available for around $225, if I remember right.... I sent an email asking about them.
Jenn has a few birds for sale ...
@RavynFallen those are nice! It's amazing how different the cockerel looks vs his granddaddy....both are very nice
I'm not sure what to think, either... I look at his pics and it seems like the pens are divided by color variety, but then he's got some really mixed looking birds (my 3 are a...
Oh, ok. .. their albums have some nice birds....it would be a shame to lose them as breeders.....
I understand Edd's issue with the "Standard of Extinction," but it sure would be nice if he kept a few birds that weren't so mixed up! I hope he can tell me about the breeding background and how...
I agree with your logic on the shanks.... I just wanted an experienced point of view
I was reading over Edd's website, he says he'll be available for business contacts starting in March... however, his FB page doesn't say that, it just says to contact him by email for information on birds and...
@RavynFallen , The birds that Edd calls "Palomino" look like a light and creamy duckwing..... oh man, just lovely.... I have to email him and see if I can get some live birds from that pen..... I saw some similar color birds under Ray-n-Debi's profile page, but at the time I didn't know what...
LOL, yeah that's what I get for drinking (coffee) and surfing at the same time ... My Mac is 10yrs old, so I know its near the end anyway, I don't need to help it any! .... I just got it up and running, however briefly, but at least I got BYC on my phone!
LOL, that is hilarious! All bark...
@RavynFallen, those are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing some eye candy, lol!
I spilled coffee on my old Mac and toasted it, so please bear with, I'm having to learn to use my phone!
- On shank colors, do you know if there is any consensus on non-sop colors, like say, Splash or Pyles, or those...
Thanks! She's a little more social toward me, than the other pullet.... I used to like blue quite a bit, but in recent months I've grown to like the natural wild type pattern, and I've seen some straight red colored Araucanas that were nice.... Edd Sheppard has some that he's bred, they are a...
