A few words to share. I am fairly new to chickens and absolutely love it. I love my Marans. I joined this community to gain more knowledge and to meet others with the same passion as me. Before I go further into the reason of my post let me tell you a little more about myself. Take it or leave...
Well, I moved some birds around today. Very noise in the coop this evening. They were not happy lol. Checked my young little roo again today and so far no white yet. I hope it stays that way!
Well decided to go and try and get some pictures of a 2.5 Month old Roo Im going to use. The cards were stacked against me. I bought a new phone so, between him not sitting still, being flighty and a slow camera speed it was tough. I think he is going to be a great bird though you cant get much...
Well, I tried to keep it around 35% though it did dip a bit lower at times. I wasnt to concerned with it as I thought humidity wasnt crucial using a dry hatch method. I also assumed that this method was preferred with Marans eggs. Its odd if this was important why is it a 50-50 on feet issues? I...
Ok, I have a nother question. Im trying to look at chicks a bit more closely. By looking at my adults I noticed smaller outside toes are more prevalent on my girls. While as the Roos have big long toes. I know smaller outer toes tend to happen on feathered leg breeds. Out of the 4 new chicks I...
I dont want them to be a sardine or like what they do for veal. I want something ample in size so they can move. Where I live space is a premium. So if I can move a Roo out and a Hen in thats what I would like.
Ok, I was contemplating getting one of these. I know under the general description it tells how many chicks can go in there. But does anyone know what is the max amount of time Marans can stay in these before they outgrow them?

Good morning everyone. I just woke up. I am exhausted. I have been studying all week for a huge test. My brain is fried and Im worn out mentally and physically and I have a few days yet. Its been so long since I had to study for anything. Im stressed that Im not retaining enough and I have to...
Well Im not familiar with the color eggs Leghorns lay. I know they are either white or brown. If they lay white eggs you will get i think the standard brown color eggs. If they lay a brown egg, you may get a shade or two darker. You probably will not get any substantially dark Marans shades of...
As requested here are some photos of the little ones. I have to say these 4 are the most docile chicks Ive had. They love my hand and crawl and hop over it, crawl under it, eat from it. They are funny!
Good morning my fellow chicken crazed friends. Well I think my hatch is done. I have 4 BCM chicks. I tell you what, the egg membrane on these eggs were the thickest I have ever seen. Compared to all the other eggs I have hatched these eggs were like twice as thick. Im amazed any got through. I...
I think if you mate the Blue with the Splash it should produce offspring with the feathered legs if that is your goal. Also I think even if you mated him to a bird without feathered legs you may get a small percentage with feathered shanks. It may not have a lot, but Im sure you Roo came from a...
It was my understanding that as middle toe feathering was an undesirable trait that you didnt want to breed those forward? I dont want junk so I may cull. As I stated before. My birds are a little sparce on leg feathers. So in reality it shouldnt be there. Who knows.
Well so far I have 2 Black Copper chicks out right now. One has 2 microscopic feathers on the middle toe errrrr. So unless the feather fairy comes back and takes the feathers that she wasnt suppose to put on the toe, I already have a cull!!! i dont know where the heck those came from. A good...
Well its the end of day 19 of my test batch and I have a very small pip. I may wake up to a little one. I started out with 17 eggs and Im down to 10. Im looking forward to see how they would turn out, and Im in need of Black Coppers. Here is to hoping that most of the rest hatch and they are all...
