The dust that accumulates is unreal! I could understand in the small coop we have, but our girls have only been in their big coop since (10x14) since the beginning of December and I already can’t believe how much dust is everywhere. I’m looking forward to the spring when I can open up the windows!
This is how I do it as well. Open the windows and door and air it out.
I also had the nasty flu last year which kicked my lungs butt.
Seems like masking while cleaning should be our New Year’s resolution!
I really should invest in a box. Do you just wear yours while doing any kind of cleaning, or even during “visiting hours”?
**edited grammar so sentence actually made sense lol
I used to wear just a medical mask when I first got chickens. That slowly faded out. I have a really nice respirator mask my father in law gave me but I have yet to wear it when cleaning. I keep thinking about it everytime I scoop out their poop board. Maybe someday soon.
I don’t wear anything either, but keep thinking I should. I’m the same, I usually just step out for some fresh air. The worst that happens with me with the dust from shavings is my eyes get itchy.
Oh my goodness that’s awful! Sorry to hear that! Yes, something like that would certainly teach you to mask up! My husband has cystic fibrosis, I don’t even really like him being in the coop to visit the birds, let alone when I do any kind of cleaning, because I worry about him.
We all know how much dust those birds can create, so I'm just wondering who wears some kind of respiratory protection when they are in and around the coop - and when!
Have you had any issues from not wearing a mask?
