    Euthanasia Assistance Request

Thank you. She's really been the heart of our homesteading lives for many years now. I could write a book about her ❤️We knew, of course, a chicken's life is short. We just want her (and all of theirs) passing to be as smooth and quiet as possible. And to be in context of their flock. They...

    Euthanasia Assistance Request

Thank you for the reply. We have studied all the different culling methods and tried several different ones over the years. Injection is the method we've settled on even though we have not yet administered it for the first time. Sodium thiopental is the gentlest method and least traumatic for...

    Euthanasia Assistance Request

Thanks for the reply. I totally understand! Yes, there are no "proper channels" for acquiring it. We have very little money and it's just not practical to bring someone out here; I honestly don't even know if I could find someone who would travel even if I had the money. I certainly wouldn't...

    Euthanasia Assistance Request

I use YT all the time for informational videos. I already found vids about reconstituting powdered medication. Didn't look for injection administration types yet. That's a good idea, I'll give it a go. Thank you for the reply and the suggestion!

Thank you very much for the reply! Yes, I'll reach out to the vet this week. The worst they can say is "no comment." But hadn't thought of email... I'll try. Thanks again!

    Euthanasia Assistance Request

Sorry for the delayed reply; work has been very demanding lately and our girl seems to have recovered to her "new normal." Still has more labored breathing than the younger ones; but she's feisty and back to her usual antics. Just takes more naps now... Excellent question. I have not. I just...

    Euthanasia Assistance Request

I understand that most with knowledge of this subject will not want to reply; for many possible reasons. That's totally fine. But *IF* someone out there has knowledge and is willing to share, I greatly welcome and appreciate it. We love our girls and want to make sure their last day is as good...

Euthanasia Question - Chemical Supply Source?

Yes, I did find a seditive-based method that requires merely an injection. Perfect for us as our flock are dear pets; kept for fun, not production. You certainly have explored the ins and outs of this! No harm in sharing more information for posterity's sake, for sure. Thank you! :)

Euthanasia Question - Chemical Supply Source?

That makes sense because labs have easy access to much more sensible methods. Ether is quite difficult (but not impossible) to make humane. Agreed for most folks, CD or the chop are probably the methods that make the most sense. But those are not for me for personal reasons. Regardless I...

Euthanasia Question - Chemical Supply Source?

Thank you! Sorry for the delay. Found a solution and life has just been awfully busy and I didn't know folks had responded! The chickens are all very well (apart from needing a worming)! Just so you know asphyxiation (CO2) is a terrifying experience. I almost suffocated while sleeping in a...

Deworming DD: Cecal worm or Capillaria? Individual/Whole Flock?

Thank you for the reply! We have an oral syringe and will use it :) The Safe-Guard label calls for (and many BYCers agree) a doseage of 5mg/kg (2.3mg/lb). But there are other recommendations in the 5-day course to dose much higher. For example, 10-50 mg/kg here. What dosage would you use?

Deworming DD: Cecal worm or Capillaria? Individual/Whole Flock?

That's actually a much lower threshold than I expected! Thank you for the link. Very helpful! Any thoughts on how long the compounds that cause toxicosis accumulate in their systems? We've never given anywhere near that, of course. But would a little bit over consecutive days add up...

Deworming DD: Cecal worm or Capillaria? Individual/Whole Flock?

Ah. I had heard only just recently that ACV wasn't effective on worms. I kept them on it because I figure it can't hurt; just a gut biome/immune system assist. Like the garlic. But I hadn't heard of toxicity of garlic to chickens! Not that we give them much. But I had better go dig up some data...
