Bantam ID from TSC Assorted Bin

Picked these 7 chicks out of the TSC assorted bantam bin about 1 month ago. I believe 3 of them are Gold Sebrights (correct me if I'm wrong on that) but I'm not sure on the other 4. I think they may be different colors of OEG but I've never had bantams before so I could be way off. Thoughts?

Bantam chick ID - Sold as EE pullets

I picked up these chicks from TS about a week and a half ago. I was told they were bantam EE pullets. I know bantams aren't normally sold as sexed, so I knew there was a chance this was very wrong. They were so interesting looking so I figured even if that's wrong it's not a big deal. They were...

Providing water for ducklings raised by broody

I currently have 4 duck hens on nests and one more showing the signs. I'm not counting my ducklings before they hatch, but I'm hoping each hatches at least a couple. :fl I've had broody chicken hens with chicks but I'd love to have some broody ducks toddling around with babies. :love Anyway, to...

Pheasant showed up- keep or don’t keep- what would you do?

I came home to find a Yellow Golden Pheasant in my barn coop. I’ve got a neighbor who has peacocks (have heard them) so I thought I’d check with them. Turns out he belongs to them but they let him roam. The rest of their birds are in runs so I believe he’s an extra male. I asked the neighbor if...

Are some strains of CX hardier than others?

I've only done CX for the past two summers. Last year I ordered layer and CX chicks from Meyer. I think it was about 25 total, they came in two shipments because the second package was to replace doa chicks. I won't blame Meyer for the chick deaths as I think it was the fault of the Post Office...

Converting a chicken coop to a quail run

At my old house this was my chicken and duck coop and run. I had it taken down and took all the materials with me. The pieces laid untouched for a long while. Modifications were made to make it lower. There were a few hiccups in trying the put everything back together but it’s finally up and...

Blue and Splash Ameraucana, 13 weeks, gender check

These two chicks are 13 weeks old. They were hatched from my own flock. The mixed breed cockerels from the same hatch are very clearly male at this point, have been for a while. I'm hoping for a pure Ameraucana male to help with my low fertility issues (too many females for just one rooster)...

    Cream Legbar Sexing

I received my order of straight run Cream Legbars from Murry this morning. They even added an extra one. I know they are supposed to be auto sexing but I'm having trouble telling what's what. It's probably because they are hatchery. I'm hoping for at least a couple of cockerels so I have more...

Hen with a bad attitude, wavering on what to do

I've got a hen that is causing a few problems. She's head hen and has no problem letting the others know. So far she has not caused any injury to any older birds or shown any bully behavior. The problems happen in the next boxes. When she needs to lay an egg she always wants to lay in a box...

    4 dead, none eaten

Sadly I came home to 4 dead chickens today. I’ve lost quail to skunks but this would be my first loss of chickens to a predator. And of course 3 of them were among the prettiest and my favorites. I live out in the plains. I’m part of a little mini neighborhood with lot sizes ranging from 2-5...

My Totally Gross but Maybe Funny if it Didn't Happen to You Story

I've noticed my Welsh Harlequin hen, Petunia, acting a bit odd the last few days. She wasn't with the others for most of the day and only showed up at night to be let in the coop. I had the suspicion she was going broody and had a nest somewhere. I did go looking for a hidden clutch on Saturday...

    Broody Coturnix with a twist

I just thought this was funny so had to share. I have a coturnix that went broody. If that's not odd enough, it's a male. I know the chances of him staying on the nest and/or actually raising the chicks is very low so I'll be keeping a very close eye on him.

Bred or not bred? ND doe has me confused

I have three ND does. One is 6 years old and two are turning one year in May. I bought all three last summer. On March 24th a ND buck came to stay with us. He is with the girls full time. The first day my older doe, Holly, was acting like she was in heat and he, Copper, was doing his best to woo...

How do you handle a broody? (not about breaking a broody)

One of my hens went broody on Friday. She is my second broody ever. I don't mind her sitting so I'm not looking on ways to break her broodiness (I think raising chicks would actually be good for her). I marked the eggs she was on that evening and let her be. She is a very timid hen and is easily...

    Thoughts on first goat breeding

Last year I purchased my first goats, a doe in milk and two doelings. They are all Nigerian Dwarfs. The doe is now 6 years old and the doelings were born in May, so are now 8 months. The doe also kidded in May. I would like to breed all of them but am debating the timing of it. I plan to find a...

Growths on liver. Safe to eat?

I butchered duck for the first time today and found these strange looking growths on the liver of one of them. The other liver (same bird) also had a few but they mere much smaller. No growths on any other organs. One of the little balls sort of popped off. Does anyone know what these are? Is it...

    Chicks won't go outside

A little background, sorry if it's long... I have my coop built into part of my barn. The pop door is on a sensor timer and leads outside to open space (no run, all free range). I have a batch of 5 EE chicks I raised that were/are 14 weeks and a bunch of 8-9 week old mix of layer breed chicks...

    Resting- a logistical question

I plan to do my first big butchering session this weekend. I've got some CX and a few EE cockerels that have purchased their tickets to freezer camp. I've done both quail and chicken before so I've got a good idea of what I need and what to do. However, in the past I've kept everything whole...

Meyer Meal Maker- not what I originally thought

I ordered 10 assorted layers, 10 CX, and a meal maker from Meyer. Their site says they will match the meal maker to your order, so a person who orders all layers won't end up with a meat bird and visversa. When I got my order there were 11 fluffy white chicks with yellow legs so I figured they...

Keeping a Mediteranian breed in a cold climate

I ordered 5 pullets from the Meyer's Hatchery Rare Breed assortment with one of my orders. One of them is a Sicilian Buttercup. The description says it's a Mediterranean breed that isn't well suited to cold climate. I live in central Colorado. We do get cold snaps were it can reach below zero...
