I looked at the topic of how to provide 'good' pictures and I'm trying to figure out how I can do that without escaping chicks. Their brooder is in a coop so i have to lock the big kids out. May try that tomorrow morning. Thank you for the info... sounds like I have a bit to go!!
At what age... ROUGHLY... will I be able to see sex differences in EEs?
EEs seem to be so special (read: difficult) because they are a 'non breed.' I have read SO many different things that my head is swimming. Feathering, coloring, number and position of nubs on comb... etc etc. But...
Just hatched 13 of 14 eggs. Transferred the chicks out to brooder.
The remaining egg had yolk all over it and it was stuck to the tray in the hatcher. I immediately thought BAD EGG and went for gear just in case of explosion.
i got the egg loose and there was in fact a deceased chick...
Thats a good idea. Thank you.
Yes. They have layer pellets and extra calcium. It looks like a problem across all 3 girls that I have in that coop. They are dark cornish.
So basically you just add more eggs as you go? I have never heard (!!!) of this. How long do you allow the new additions to go on? I have 2 7 egg brinseas and I try to have each one full before I start them.
When preparing eggs for the incubator, I ran into several eggs that appear to have been 'healed cracks' from somewhere in the hens reproductive tract.
I soaked them in Manna Pro Egg Cleanser because they were pretty messy from the rain.
Would you set these or should I pass? I have some older...
Exhibit D.... are just a bunch of shots of the 'small pale combs' that I had lumped together. Didn't bother adding the pics of the tail feathers as it doesn't seem like it matters now.
Thank you so much. I will stick with my 'small, pale comb' method to separate out for now. There are 6 total i need to be looking at. And it is mish mosh of insanity. Lol.
Those little combs and the feathers together have been what is throwing me off. All the small combs are pale. The large combs are turning pinkish. The feathers are a mystery.
Looks like a female to me? Maybe I'm right? Lol.
Ps... and Thank You for sharing your pics. I stressed mine out so will try pics in the am with an extra person to help.
I am wondering if anyone has a minute to show me pics of their Rhode Island Red chicks that are maybe 6 weeks old.
I hatched some eggs from a friend. I sorted out the mixes.... and now I am left with 7 and I have no idea what I'm looking at here.
I've got big combs and little combs. I've...
Thank you so much for that. I have not been brave enough to check on it this morning with the other chicks. For me, that is always the worst part of having a little bit, is seeing if it survived the sleep pile.
I do think you are right...that there could be something else unknown at play. i'm going to put 2 leg bands on this one to make sure I keep it straight for future remembering.
I candled twice in the dry incubator. Once at 8 days and again at 19 before the hatcher.
The other 9 chicks...
