I was leaning that way too. We're out in the country far from neighbors, so hopefully they're not obnoxious crowers. All the other chickens definitely appear to be pullets. As long as they keep their manners with the hens they'll have a home with us.
I have 2 15 week old Black silkies, Jellybean and Snickerdoodle. Jellybean has less poof and feather length on head and neck and Snickerdoodle is developing waddles. Both developing ok size crowns. No red/purple coloration on crown or waddles. No crowing yet. No big streamers that I see.
Both...
I'm finally at the end of a long coop build and appreciate all the info on this site. I will paint exterior after the girls are in the coop since hubby and I haven't found a color we agree on 🤣
I have sections that are 3/4" x 20" that are open (there are 8). Is it worth putting a 1x board in...
Aart,
The tall side faces south with the 2 windows the 3rd window is on the west side. And they all open sliding down from the top.
Thanks for location advice too.
Ridgerunner, the roof rafters are hung like a home with metal rafter hanger brackets and 'ladders' with 2x4s were also added after pictures to support and secure the angled sides. We finished off the roof with metal trim today also, so the roof ridges don't provide ventilation. Sorry that wasn't...
Yes. Those framed areas.
We are on top of a hill and since 2 neighbors logged their properties the wind has picked up from 3 directions. I believe I'll go with the hinged openings.
Thanks, Rosemarythyme
I need all your expertise. We've built our first coop and I'm debating the ventilation. Please ignore all the ladders and materials laying around. I see differing advice all over the place.
The roof is metal with eves (2x4s) that are open all the way around and are going to be open with...
No names yet. We've made lists and are waiting a bit as they're looking different. watching their unique behaviors as clues too. There's a definite spazz, a runt, an adventurer, etc.
Young adult kids will be home next Friday, so we plan on group brainstorming then.
That's the type I have and it will only have one side with chicks eating, so lots of stress free room. I'm going to start spreading feed on the brooder floor as another suggested. She'll benefit and others may practice sooner.
That's what i think I'll do. I'll spread food in areas on the ground too. Some waste now, but a healthy girl down the road is worth it. Plus others will practice more foraging skills. Thanks
I have brought in chunks of grass with dirt twice this week . At first they're terrified, then eventually eat it. All (including the tiny girl) enjoy this. My concern is to try to get their main diet crumbles, while still young and think of the grass clump as more of a treat.
I appreciate that...
A week ago they were similar in size, now she's smaller. She doesn't even attempt to go to where everyone is eating when the rest are. They have a lot of room/possible eating spots in feed area as well as water area to keep down competing. I doubt bantam as they came from wilco in sme bin with...
Good morning.
I'm new to baby chicks (they are about 2-3 weeks old) and I have noticed one of the Speckled Sussex is much smaller /lighter weight than the others and almost half the size of the other speckled sussex of same age with less feathering. She is very quick, running everywhere...
