How do you keep chickens water cold?

When our temps get up to high 80s, the water has gotten hot and I had to put ice in it just to bring it down a few degrees. I could figure out a way to insulate the barrel and provide more shading. It sits on the outside of the run, since it's small right now (I do plan to enlarge it considerably).

How do you keep chickens water cold?

I am looking for tips and advice on how to keep my chick's water cold. I've got 5 10-week old chicks, and I use a rain barrel water system with PVC pipe and water cups running into my chicken coop- it's a small TSC coop if that makes any difference. Right now, I've just been buying bags of ice...

    Pest Control

They've moved outside now (for about 3-4 weeks at this point). They're 8 weeks old today. They haven't roamed the whole yard, but they do get into their designated grass outside the coop area. So far, I don't think there's been any issues.

One of my chicks has ZERO tail feathers

Yeahhhh, outside of extending the run, which i do plan to do, my options for a bigger coop are going to delayed for now.

One of my chicks has ZERO tail feathers

I just took these today. And they all turned 7 weeks today. The smallest one is one of my ISA Browns. From what I can tell, they're combs still look yellow and smallish to me. I haven't seen any waddles developing.

One of my chicks has ZERO tail feathers

I am seriously hoping I don't have any cockerels! I wouldn't even know what to do with a rooster. I am getting increasingly worried one or two of my "girls" might be though

    Small backyard coop

I really appreciate the honest feedback. I figured it would be too small for them. It has 3 nesting boxes as of now. I have been making my own adjustments and alterations to the overall coop, to include giving them a larger run. That's definitely something I have to consider though about my...

    Small backyard coop

There's 5, 2 ISA Browns and 3 Rhode Island Reds. I do plan on letting them out to roam the yard a couple times a week. I was wondering if I might use the deep litter method if possible inside th coop and the run.

    Small backyard coop

I'm debating on what the best type of flooring to put in my chicken run. It was grass at first, but I was worried about it getting muddy. I'm in the Southampton, VA area and while we don't get much snow, it gets pretty rainy, and temps right now for spring range from lows in the 30s to anywhere...

Topic of the Week - Raising Chicks

Hi all! I've had my first batch of chicks ever for about 3 weeks now (TSC estimated they were about a week old when I got them). And I've been learning a lot, especially just about the brooder set up. And mine has changed a few times already. Now I'm brooding in their coop at 4 weeks old. Our...

4 week old ISA Brown feathers look weird

That's what I was hoping! She didn't feel wet, but I do have the water elevated in the coop and they go under it. It just looks weird and crusty almost. I was scared to touch them in case she was hurt or something! I haven't had to do any chick 1st aid yet, and I'm dreading the day I do.

4 week old ISA Brown feathers look weird

😅😬 it's me again, hi all! I posted about the same chick when she was 2 weeks old, now she's 4 weeks old, and her feathers still baffle me. This time I came out to see that something weird was going on with the feathers around her neck. They have a brooder plate in their coop that stays on the...

    First night in the coop

Once I figure out the heating situation, should I put their food and water inside the coop with them? Or does it stay in the run and they get it when they leave the coop in the morning?

    First night in the coop

I think our below freezing Temps might be over thankfully. But we still we get high 30s/40s Temps for a couple weeks more I think.
