From Sigrid's book:
" Mystery of Flitter in Leghorns
In the e+ Duckwing Leghorns there is a colour variety called 'Flitter'.
Flitter is a shining edge around each feather that really glitters in the light. A gold Duckwing is called Goldflitter as a Silver on Silverflitter. Those who breed...
Interesting that the first hen has light edge to her feathers. There is something overseas called 'flitter' -- ever hear of it? It seems like it was found in one person's flock and went from there.
There is a 'heat tape' used by people in cold climates, but it requires being plugged in. I guess the principle is that it keeps plastic pipe (or any pipe) at about 40-degrees, so not hot enough to melt, but warm enough to prevent freezing. Of course that would require good electric outlet...
Thanks for the info on cameras, mine are all pieces of junk.
@RiverOtter, is your avatar one of your Isabelles?
Fingers crossed for a game cam for Father's day, Moonshiner, do you have any live traps you could set outside the pens -- ?? My most common catches were raccoons and 'possums...
Y'know -- one of those book-writing experts once put it in a way that hit home for me. He said that certain genes are battling it out for dominance. It is like a whole band (orchestra?) when one gene pulls one way and one pulls another!!! And lots of people don't take the unseen ones into...
It's always a hard call. A hen that doesn't lay is probably not a member to keep in a flock, unless there is real attachment -- even if she really is beautiful.
;) She's been too busy changing feather coloration and flying around doing acrobatics to bother with that egg laying business. Do y'all have a kitchen scale to weigh it?
Thanks M. Congrats on your hatch!! :woot
Love it when there are picts!
Agree that Bramah Chicken 5000's action shots are top flight. Good documentation too of her going from white-tail to black-tail feathers.
ThankYou Brahma Chicken5000 - easy to read when I click on it.
Here's my imitation of Mr. Spock.: "Fascinating". (Didn't he say that a lot in the original series?)
Yikes that chicken looks yummy. I'd be drooling if I hadn't just had lunch.
:drool
Moonshiner. Thanks for taking the time to...
:thumbsup
Hope you get CLs -- since I've had them and think they are great. (Although at 3-years old seems some formerly nice roos turned mean...they do make good meals. 'Mean rooster stew'.
You have got me trying to sleuth the logistics of how blue Legbars could be sold out and no longer...
Y'know, IMO it could be even worse than that. When I took Cream Legbars to a show (I was the only Cream Legbars there so I got "Best in Breed" and "Reserve of Breed", but that was pretty meaningless since it was all my chickens competing against eachother, but at least I could see the ones that...
It would be interesting to see,IMO you should post picts.
Love that illustration Miami.... Notice that each male has a different comb ? Or are my eyes deceptive. Is the bottom right supposed to be barred Leghorn? Don't see many of them anyway. Nice comparison on the middle line of silver...
:thumbsup Nice construction - from recycled stuff too. The earth thanks you.
:love What nice looking birds. I agree with both of you, buff looks really good on a leghorn.
Was thinking this morning how lucky we all are to have our own egg layers.
Yikes~ That would about be heart-attack time for me. Loved to hear the history of how you got where you are today. Your chicken-raising goes way back, and you started learning at an early age.
As I understand it, Isbars (Silverudd's Blue Isbars) were developed by Sweedinsh monk Martin Silverudd - and he was even aiming for autosexing, so he wasn't quite finished with his project at the time of his death -- but Leghorn is a big part of Isbar genetics. I think they also contain some...
:caf
Guess #1: whichever color is dominant between the two breeds. :lau
Guess #2: the same color as the picture from Privett.;)
Guess #3: IDK
Now you got us going you need to tell us.
Had to chuckle when Moonshiner asked if their blue Leghorns are BBS like - -let's say Silverudd's Blues. What if they just crossed an Andalusia with a Leghorn...what would happen? Mixed type-- and blue color. (Now I know it would take more than that. LOL However, I think that may be the...
