Dr Jing! She's very nice and keeps her own chickens. It's a shorter drive too, which is probably a good thing for a sick chook.

    MJ's little flock

Well, I think the new vet (Dr Jing) was more thorough and consequently more expensive that Dr Mark, who has a lifetime of experience and can pinpoint a problem very quickly. I found the length of the appointment (around 40 minutes) and the integration of lab tests and diagnosis very...

Ok, well there a loads of mozzies. I'm guessing the pesky mozzies were the culprits. I'll step up my mozzie reduction efforts in the roost.

She did say it might be secondary and to bring her back for xrays if the medication doesn't work.

Here she is feeling too sick to eat the mealworms the vet gave her.

It's a very long appointment. 30 minutes and counting.

It's spirochaetes. She has way too many in her crop. She's going to have a highly effective medication but I won't be allowed to eat her eggs any more. It's called metronidazol. Or something like that.

Katie has inflamed intestines but her poop was clear of parasites (and the hens have never been wormed - sandy soil seems to reduce parasites). Now she's having a crop sample examined.

Gotta love a vet who keeps a jar of dried crickets on the shelf!

Well, Dr Mark has retired (or he's trying to) so I'm trying a new vet. It's a chain vet specialising in exotic species, The Unusual Pet Vets. She's halfway through her appointment and being amazingly well behaved. She's not egg bound! I'm delighted. But now we're exploring other possibilities.

Thanks Bob. I dare not open the basket in case I can't catch her again without injuring her (she's so flighty) so I haven't yet looked at her this morning. We're off to the vet in 15 minutes.

    MJ's little flock

Just following up on the weird eggs post to say I was wrong. I now think they were Katie's. Today she has egg bound symptoms. She's in the travel basket and her vet appointment is in 14 hours. Wish us luck.

    MJ's little flock

Hmmm there was a surprise for me in the little coop. I think both are Edie's. She's been on holiday for a good long while and starting to look very red in her comb and wattles. Whereas Katie hasn't yet stopped laying and her shells are reliably brown and speckled. So I'm guessing the soft...

Yes, I've put two of the backyard chairs on the veranda, they're like your blue ones but unpainted. There's a third one washed off and waiting to be carried around. I still have to purchase a long bench to put near the front door.

It was lovely, very tranquil. Yesterday a friend visited for lunch and we sat on the veranda for a chat. Four different people stopped as they were walking by and said lovely things about the house. The next door neighbour likes it so much, he is going to use the same painter.
