Had a scare today. I got home from work later than usual (meeting) and headed out to the coop. Tamar and two chicks, check. Rahab and ...3 chicks?!? I started to panic, not again! The waterer was gummed up so I quickly rinsed out the straw, filled the jar and returned it to the brooder. Rahab...
Thank you. I'm wondering if it just "failed to thrive". It felt a little bony.
I recall that I was able to help LC, and see how big he is now!
Blue's on the left, LC in the middle facing away.
Blue's comb isn't as bright red as the others.
:barnie
If I have any doubts I will not take blue to...
One of Rahab's chicks is not right. It just sits there. I picked it up easily, and it kept opening and closing its mouth as if it was peeping, no sound. No pasty butt. It wouldn't drink when I dipped its beak in water, wouldn't eat any mush when I smeared it on its beak.
I made some vitamin B...
Good Momma Tamar!
As I was filling the five gallon feeders this morning Rahab squawked at me, possibly to remind me that her brood needed some food, too.
I also dropped a small handful of chopped grapes and cheese shreds in her brooder, and was rewarded by seeing one of Rahab's chicks running...
Went out about 5. Tamar appears to be showing her two chicks where food is and encouraging them. That's a good sign, she was stuck on brooding egg behavior this morning.
I added a chick waterer with a nipple that I ordered through Amaz0n. I picked up each chick and tapped their beak on the...
There's a bit of drama in the coop. I think adding a brooder, and the presence of chicks has the flock a little stirred up...plus some of the big chicks are doing a bit of sparring already.
There's an auction on June 8th. I might take 2 or 3 of the cockerels, to ease the pressure some.
Sunday Morning
Looking better this morning. I dipped their beaks in the waterer and feeder. Tamar is still acting as if she's on eggs.
Rahab has skipped the nesting box option, made a new nest in the straw. She looks like an old pro.
Not the clearest image, but Martha has officially kicked...
I put the last incubator chick in with Tamar.
She looks a bit bedraggled, not fluffed up yet. I hope she looks better in the morning.
Here's her sibling and foster mom:
I removed the three remaining eggs from Tamar's nest. They're in the incubator with the two that didn't hatch, but I am...
Second brooder set up.
I had to add the cardboard sides as the paparazzi hens were upsetting Tamar!
Tamar and eggs and chick settled in. I'll add the incubator chick this evening.
And.... we're up to SEVEN!!!
:th
I moved Rahab and her bunch into the A-frame brooder, the chicks were already making forays outside the nesting box.
:love
I'm going to set up the other brooder this afternoon, for Tamar and the remaining chicks. The chick in her nest that was zipping this...
Now I am thinking about housing a second brood. I have the A-frame brooder refreshed with clean straw, ready for Rahab and her brood... but what about Tamar? Her nest is in a wheelbarrow in the back, near the roost.
I could use my dog crate brooder with a cover added to keep the flock from 💩...
