The young cockerel hasn't figured out tit-bitting. 😅 I gave them blueberries today as a treat. He found one and excitedly called the girls, then ate it before they could. The three older girls want nothing to do with him, but the POL pullets are acting like his groupies.

    Possible breeding program

The Biel x JG/BA chicks have access to food but much prefer foraging. Yay, Mama! Even in 5 weeks she did such a good job. I see them out there, chasing bugs, scratching and playing while the brooder raised birds sit in the shade and wait impatiently for me to bring their dinner.

    Possible breeding program

Broody 2 only hatched 1 chick, a tiny yellow. I'll see if I can find a few more chicks for her tomorrow. She abandoned the nest with her baby so I pulled the remaining eggs into my incubator. Looks like they all made it to lockdown at least. Some still show veins. I didn’t see any internal...

    Possible breeding program

Looks like broody1 has abandoned her chicks at week 5. She's foraging with the adult flock and the babies are foraging on their own. Broody 2 is hatching! One baby out so far, three to go. I have another 3 in the house to give her once they hatch.

    Possible breeding program

The new broody is sitting on a bunch of eggs OUP (of unknown parentage). A couple more days to lockdown. I don't want any more eggs from the Biel x JG roo, so when she went broody I arranged to get some eggs from a friend. She is currently sitting on 2 Marans eggs, one pink egg and one blue...

    Possible breeding program

The Biel x JG x BA/JG chicks are 5 weeks old. Mama is spending part of her time just sitting in the shade while the chicks explore. The babies are still staying pretty close, but no screaming if they're out of her sight. Except the littlest one. She's still spending a lot of time under Mom...

    Possible breeding program

I have an escape artist. I put the boys in a bachelor pad under the deck. The door is still closed. I realized he was out because the little girls were squaking and the older cockerel was chasing him. He wouldn't leave the girls alone even after dark, so I put him back. If he's figured a way...

    Possible breeding program

Bielefelder x JG x JG (Biel x JG cockerel over JG hen) Biel x JG x BA, already showing a comb, and at least in one case, it's already turning pink.

    Possible breeding program

So all three boys are in the bachelor pad for at least the next month. Somebody killed one of the 12 week chicks, I think trying to mate her, but she was the smallest... The girls are going in the coop at night without me having to carry them in and there's a lot less stress. At the other end...

    Possible breeding program

So I have a broody in the broody cage with her babies, and another in the main coop. Last night I put the troublemaker cockerel in the bachelor pad. He was being a horny teenager, and since the adult hens were running him off he started trying the 12 week old pullets and ambushing the hens. The...

    Possible breeding program

That hasn't been my experience. In this case, the first two chicks she accepted were dumped behind her while I kept her attention with the other hand. She heard them, started burbling, and from that moment they were a happy little family. That was during the day. The following night I...

    Possible breeding program

She eventually took all four. They were born on the second and the third, so nearly a week old. Their first outside excursion was an adventure. They're in the broody cage attached to another coop. The other birds have been interested but basically ignored them except for complaining that they...

    Possible breeding program

I may have a problem, or I may be imagining things. My broody hen goes broody twice a year, since she started to lay. First time a snake took all her eggs. 2nd time, she was so happy with her babies! Attentive, watchful. Two died in the coop at 2 days old. I assumed the rooster, but they were...

    Possible breeding program

Biel x JG x BA. Hatched this afternoon. I was expecting black, since his father is black barred and his mother black.

    Possible breeding program

These boys are the JG x RIR back-cross (in order of hierarchy), currently at almost 15 weeks. #1 and his brother are the same size, but he's the undisputed leader. He's the most intelligent of the three. His hackle feathers are the same bright red as his brothers, but it doesn’t show against...
  17. LaurenRitz

    Possible breeding program

This week I'll put out the morning feeding some time after I let the chicks out. Get them used to foraging early, but still have plenty of food during the day. Then their evening feeding as usual.
  18. LaurenRitz

    Possible breeding program

This morning I put out the chicks food as usual and they basically ignored it. One or two nibbled, then walked away. Time to work on transitioning them to primarily free range. The other group of chicks (Rangers and Buckeyes) are also going out to find breakfast, then returning to eat later. I...
  19. LaurenRitz

    Possible breeding program

JG x RIR back-cross cockerel. Looks just like his dad at the same age. Those bright red feathers are starting to appear. All three cockerels are getting their boy-feathers at almost 11 weeks.
