Hey. The chicks have already hatched. There was no P9 egg, but there was an S9, which got the name Demeter or Chiron. There are also chicks with the names Calypso and Faun.
I posted a link to the growing up thread a little further up, if you're interested in checking that out.
They do look like an odd blueish-brown color. I did have a blue and a blue cuckoo silkie in the pen.
As far as I'm aware, my birds don't carry the mottling gene.
I have a question, this being my first hatch-a-long and all. How long after hatching do people typically do updates on chicks?
I'd be happy to start a new thread and post weekly pictures of this year's chicks there, since I'll be taking the pictures to keep track of growth anyway. If any of you...
Aphrodite is confusing me. The down is yellow with a bit of brown on its lower back, while the wings are dark. I know I don't have any dominant whites in the parent flock. Why in the world would the down be yellow if the feathers is dark? *Sigh* so many genetic mysteries when you hatch mixed...
Sadly, I don't think the last eggs will hatch. I candled them yesterday and there was no movement in any of the eggs. The silkie eggs and Aredia never pipped internally, and 25 had pipped internally, but for some reason never made an external pip. I left them in there yesterday just in case, but...
It took me a little while and a bit of panicking thinking I'd somehow lost a chick indoors because that one definitely hatched, but I figured it out.
The lavender isn't 24 but it's 26. Egg 24 died early on. I didn't have it crossed out in one of my lists. Therefore the 2nd lavender is Alouette.
So after I sat down, looked at my list of chick names and my notes on some of the chicks that I watched hatch, I finally named (almost) everyone. I hope I have identified most correctly.
I also now took pictures of everyone who has hatched. I went ahead and named 17, 19 and 21, which were...
Yes, I decided to candle them very quickly earlier since everyone else had hatched and and these eggs had no external pips.
Aredia was moving around quite a bit in the egg. Abigail (25) looked to have pipped internally, but I didn't see any movement. The other two (2 and 11) didn't show any...
Azaelean/Azaelon, Morpheus, and another paint silkie have joined the brooder gang. I also brought out the big camera to take some better pictures.
Aphrodite
Ares
Artemis
Amelia
Morpheus
The interesting thing about this one is that it has 6 toes on both legs. Well, it's more like the...
The 5 older chicks have been moved to the brooder. Pretty much the only chicks I can still tell apart with confidence. That's Ares, Artemis, Amelia, Aphrodite, and Demeter/Chiron. They all look so different from one another. Soon a few other older, dried off chicks will join them.
Amelia is on...
Of corse, I understand! I absolutely support the idea of naming the ones without names. Sorry if you got the impression I was annoyed or something, that was not my intention.
The ones left are Hermes (2), Grover (11), Thalia (15), Abigail (25), and Aredia (32). Thalia has pipped. Still waiting on the rest.
I'd love to but most the pictures end up blurry because of how much they move around plus having to take photos through the plastic. I can't wait for them to be...
