Oh no! I am sorry for your loss. :hugs Do you know what caused it? I would suggest separating them-find anything that could work if you can. It might not have died from trampling, it could have been totally random like a heart attack. Either way, it is not your fault!
My plan is to keep only two of them, the rest go to (a) good home(s). The two I am keeping are Odie (one of Ruby's and Jasper's chicks) and Cumulus (one of the Cochin Bantams). Odie is really sweet and I hope he continues to be like that-if he is not, or if he is breeding-aggressive, then he is...
The oldest I have had a cockerel start crowing was at six months old. He was a Speckled Sussex. I was starting to wonder if he was ever going to crow and then, one day, I heard this call in a deep voice . . . "OOO-ER-Uhhh". After a minute of investigating, it was him. 🤣
The ugly stage is sometimes when they start getting cute! My chicks are at the ugly/cute stage. There is one cockerel that is adorable. He is Ruby's chick and he takes after her a lot in his appearance. And personality. He is constantly trying to get on my hand, shoulder, head, or just wanting pets.
Bantams would not be good for that, then. Too small. Quartz (the dam) is about six inches tall and Jasper (the sire) is a little bit taller than that. I doubt their sons will be food-sized! What do you do with excess bantam cockerels? If you ever get those.
No. Just no.
Cute! It is fun watching them fly around. Bantams love it. How many weeks old are they currently? Mine are about three weeks and I already have two cockerels crowing. 🤦♀️
It is always the little ones who think they are so tough! In my Backyard Flock, April is the only bantam hen but the large fowl hens are terrified of her so it works out well.
I can't stop staring at the Serama chicks, they are so cute and tiny! But, ugh, that brings back memories. Why do the chicks always want to poop on top of the brooder plate? 🙄
I think almost all of my chicks have had pasty butt because almost all of my chickens come from Tractor Supply. I don't know what is wrong with what they feed the chicks, but their chicks are going to get pasty butt! Or already have it by the time they arrive. The chicks I hatched from my own...
Almost all of my chicks eventually have pasty butt. I make sure they have water before I even give them food, but they still get pasty butt. I think it is a really common thing for chicks to have.
I wouldn't be able to eat the chickens that I have raised, I would prefer re-homing any of the extra cockerels. That's just how I am, which I probably shouldn't be like that. Chicken tastes gross to me anyways, I see so many people saying it tastes good but I have to disagree!
