gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

Pics
I am HOPEFUL she will just get on with her stump because it would be less maintenance. However if she needs protection it’s an option as is wrapping the end with vet wrap - just curious how it will heal - when a human leg is amputated they cover the end with skin. But this was just left open with exposed muscle 🤢
I suspect you are in somewhat uncharted territory here, since most members allow their birds' feet to auto-amputate instead of paying to take the surgical route. I briefly searched BYC to locate a surgical amputation thread, but didn't find anything to help answer your questions. However, you should find some info re surgical amputation on various parrot forums. I will link one site to get you started, but there are others if you google "bird surgical amputate foot" or something similiar. .

Every case is unique though, and the more posts you make updating Polly's recovery progress, the more you will help future others who find this thread because they face a similiar situation.

Large fowl bird amputees usually need wrapping and padding to protect the stump(s), while smaller birds often do not. Polly is currently a wee chick that will eventually grow into a large fowl chicken, so you are in somewhat uncharted territiory there too.

Are you still giving her oral antibiotics?.

We just changed the bandage.
I snapped this pic tonight, then soaked it in Betadine soapy water for a smidgen (not great long soak just long enough for my husband to prepare a new bandage) sprayed some antibacterial dermaplast, then wrapped her up in a new bandage with Neosporin directly on the stump end.

She has two friends because my neighbor bought a chick today and she doesn’t want it to be lonely. (And I’m raising other chicks for her too…but decided this teeny fuzzy bum had a better chance adjusting to life outside the shell with two mellow larger chicks then the whole flock of chicks in the main brooder.

Yes she is still getting oral antibiotics-I’m assuming I keep going until the bottle runs out 🤷🏼‍♀️ Figured I’d call the vet and take her in for a visit after a bit.

I took one of our dogs in a couple days ago and the vet asked about Polly and I showed him the pics…He said Polly looks good and happy.

I let Polly run around outside in the big run with her future flock and her bandage came off. It was not bleeding so I let her run around with them in the dirt run.

Afterwards I gave it a betadine soak, sprayed with antibiotic dermaplast, snapped some pictures and decided to let her keep the bandage off for a while and see how she does. (Thoughts on that choice welcome!)

It’s not bleeding looks scabbed over but watching to make sure.

The knuckle joint looks bruised and possible swollen - I’m thinking from having the bandage on the bendy part? 🤷🏼‍♀️ The bandage wasn’t too tight (obviously or it wouldn’t of flipped off lol)

Interestingly it seems like she has the phantom foot syndrome because she itches her head with the stump but never makes contact and chews the air as if she’s picking something off her foot but never making contact between her beak and stump. (See photos)
