"Greasydog's Coop"

So, you are all probably wondering who is Greasydog? Well, my blue healer is named Greasy and I figured he would stand guard over the chicken coop so I named it after him (If he chases them I might take back the name...LOL). I recently became interested in chickens pretty much after eating a local farms fresh eggs and discovering how much better they were than store bought eggs. While browsing the internet I happened to stumble upon BYC and have been dreaming about building a coop and getting chickens ever since. I have reviewed many of the coops on the site and have settled with what I am about to show you. Since I have been busy I have not had time to build the coop while I was home, but I have drawn up some plans on Google Sketch. Google Sketch is a free program that is very versatile where you can build anything that you can imagine assuming a little time to get familiar with the program. I will be uploading the plans for my coop to their website and it will be free to download. Hope you all enjoy.

Planning and Development



This is the front of the coop that has a footprint of 12'x6' with one foot of roof overhang. The base will be made out of 4"x4" treated lumber sitting on cement pavers to deter predators. The coop will be 7' tall in the front sloping to 6' in the back.





This is the back of the coop as you can see the enclosed coop will be 4'x6' which should be sufficient for 6-8 chickens.





This is a birds eye view of the coop that shows how it is laid out from above.





The coop will be covered in wood siding called T1-11(basically plywood with vertical grooves cut into it) and then stained to be waterproof. As you can see there will be 2 foot of spacing between the bottom of the coop and the run floor so the chickens will have some place to get out of the sun besides the interior coop.





There will be a large door on the back of the coop to clean out the the poop board that will be under the roost bar. I am going to have three nesting boxes that measure 18" in the front sloping to 12" in the back with a 12" wide floor. The roof of the nesting boxes will lift up to reveal the eggs.





I am going to use 1/2"x1/2" hardware cloth to cover the entire coop walls to keep out predators. The roof will be a standard metal roof.



Materials List





So...This is my preliminary materials list. I know that it will probably wind up being a lot more but this is a good basis for cost. I really would like to keep it under $1000.00 but if it goes over that will be fine too just as long as I get some good eggs.
