Oatmeal for Chickens, the perfect fall and winter treat.png

You heard it right, chickens love oatmeal, so why not mix them up a batch or make a little extra for them? It's healthy, nutritious, and they love it! So, here's my go-to recipe for the best chicken oatmeal that I came up with just for all your chickens :)

What do I use?
I use old-fashioned oats, along with spices of my choice. Believe it or not, spices are really good for chickens. I use basic spices such as cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, black pepper, and garlic powder if you don't add it to their feed. The cinnamon is an antibacterial and antioxidant, and it helps with blood flow, plus it tastes good to them. The tumeric is an anti-inflamitory and antibacterial. It also helps with digestion, and it boosts their immune systems. The ginger helps egg yolks be higher in antioxidants and larger eggs, and the black pepper helps to flush toxins from the body and is good for their respiratory systems. The garlic powder is full of antioxidants and vitamins, and has been thought of as a natural wormer. I add garlic powder to their feed mix, but if you don't then adding it to their oatmeal wouldn't be a bad idea.

The Recipe
  • 2 cups cooked old-fashioned, quick, rolled, or steel-cut oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic
  • Sprinkle of black pepper
Once the oatmeal is cooked and cooled to room temperature, put in your spices and mix together, then serve. This is enough oatmeal for about 7-10 birds, so double it as needed.

This is fairly inexpensive, and my birds love oatmeal in any shape or form. I've been giving them dry oatmeal in their feed and cooked oatmeal since they were baby chicks, and I believe it's good to keep them healthy and strong. It's fairly inexpensive to make, especially if you cook and bake and already have everything on hand. I hope you enjoyed, and stay tuned for the next post!
