My two Pilgrim Geese, Charlie & Trudy, just love their “toy time.” When they see me bring out their blue toy bucket, they start running and screaming for joy. It’s our special time together … toy time!
Geese love to chew on things. When mine were little, they chewed on my jeans, hoodies, hats, my shoes, keys, and even my skin - ouch!
They are 4 years old now, and I have loads of tattered hoodies and tees. Even with daily toy time I still get some nibbles, but at some point early on, I decided to at least try to save my wardrobe. I began collecting toys. They had to be safe for chewing so I chose baby toys that looked chewable and we tried them out. It didn’t take long to find out which ones they liked and didn’t like.
Here are all the toys that we have now which they like, set in order of most favorite to least…
(how did those old goggles and a water bottle sneak in there?)
The All time favorite toys are the elephants and the other critters with similar design to them. My geese love to chew in a corn cob eating fashion, nibbling back and forth from the soft parts to the hard parts of these toys.
We have actually gone through several elephants that were so chewed up they started to fall apart, and we don’t want our geese to swallow any stuffing! Those were retired and I bought a few replacements. Charlie and Trudy were very happy!
In fact, I have to always have two elephants or they’ll fight over the one. The elephants and similar toys were purchased at a Dollar General store for only five dollars each. I think the price has gone up a little now though.
Most of the other toys were purchased through Amazon or Walmart.
For safety reasons, I don’t leave the toys out with the geese unsupervised. I sit down and hold the toys out while they are being nibbled. And I sing to my geese during this special time too.
Toy time is a wonderful way to bond with your pet geese, and I know that they miss it on days that I don’t bring out their special blue bucket.
Hair tie bracelets are a big hit too! Just don’t let go of them- we don’t want them to get swallowed!
Finally, these Links were especially popular when my geese were younger. and you can form a chain and hook a few toys together with them.
I hope you will try having Toy time with your pet geese! I know you ( and especially they) will enjoy it!
