With the winter monthes arriving, the tempatures have started to drop. The best way to help your chickens through it is to warm them up from the inside out, and give them beneficial food, so here I will tell you how to make chicken safe oatmeal!
To start, you will need water, oats, and chicken safe herbs.
Here are some of the herbs I used. I also included cinnamon to benefit their respiratory system. Dill weed help the chickens immune system, and will help fight of bacteria. Thyme leaves are helpful because their leaves contain antibacterial properties. Red pepper flakes are good to feed your chickens to help keep parasites away. Chickens have very few taste buds so they won’t feel much heat! And oregano leaves are another source of antibacterial properties. A light sprinkle of each herb can benefit your chickens and keep them healthier.
Quick reminder: chickens should only have treats such as oatmeal or corn once in a while. It should NOT BE MORE than 10% of their diet!
Start by putting some oats in your pot. It will depend on how many chickens you are feeding this oatmeal too.
Add in some water until all of the oats get drenched after you stirred it. Then, turn on your heat. Depending on your stove, it may take a higher or lower setting to cook it.
Your oatmeal should start to get mushy. Make sure to stir it frequently to keep it evenly cooked.
Now add a light sprinkle of each herb into the oatmeal. Don’t add to much so that your birds get sick. After mixing, it should be ready to serve to you chickens. I prefer to put it on a disposable plate that can be later thrown out. Just make sure it is not paper or anything that your chickens can eat. Happy cooking!
