Number and Type of Chickens or Rabbits
1. No more than six chickens and/or rabbits total are permitted per property.

2. Roosters and other wild and/or dangerous animals are prohibited pursuant to
Municipal Code Article 18, Section 16-62. Only the keeping of hens or female chickens
is allowed.
c. Coop Standards102
A coop is a physical structure where chickens are kept and that provides such chickens or
rabbits with protection and shelter. Coops shall meet the following standards:
1. The coop shall be designed to be resistant to predators.
2. The coop shall be kept clean and free from offensive odors.
3. Feed shall be stored within a structure in a rodent-proof, fastened container.
4. There shall be no outdoor slaughtering of hens.
5. No live hens shall be kept in a basement, cellar, or any part of any dwelling or building
used for daily human occupation.
6. The coop size shall not exceed 120 square feet and shall provide at least four square
feet of space per bird.
7. The coop height shall not exceed six feet in height.
8. Coops shall be located in the rear yard and shall be no closer than five feet from any
side or rear property line and no closer than 25 feet from any adjacent dwelling.
d. Ranging Standards
Chickens and rabbits shall have space to range in the rear yard per the following standards:
1. If a chicken run or other enclosure is used, chickens or rabbits must be provided a
minimum of 20 square feet of permeable surface per bird or animal.
2. Chickens and rabbits are allowed to range in the rear yard, up to the property line, but
must be kept in the required chicken coop from dusk until dawn.
3. Chickens and rabbits allowed to range in the rear yard must be contained by a fence
adequate to contain animals. The fence must be a minimum of four feet in height.

what state is this for

I was just informed by Syracuse Codes Enforcement in April 2022 that the laws were never passed to approve this by City Council and that Re-Zone was never passed as there is no money to enforce these new codes. They also could not pass it because of the laws barring codes from setting foot on private property whether owned or rented. They are also now considering a full ban since so many abused chickens and other farm animals have been found. I know one family lost seven chickens in two years to disease because they never once cleaned the coop or run of the waste and the chickens got mites that literally ate them alive. The new neighbors have six hens in a dog crate on the ground that is only 36" by 36" and 24" high. They do not cover them and predators have already attacked them twice in a week. Last night it went below freezing and they did not cover the crate. If laws were passed that required paid permits and proper training then I would be for people having them but o one is minding the store. Try living next to a property in mid August where they never clean the waste and you can't stand the smell to enjoy your own yard.
