Techniques in Feeding Your Flock "Off the Grid"

A great article to inspire us to be more independent of commercial feed in ways that are practical, economical and species appropriate.
I've experimented at times with different commercial layer feed and discovered it affects egg laying (not a good sign of quality!). This could be due to many things including bad batches, poor storage/delivery practices, etc.
By not being 100% dependent on commercial feed we're doing our chickens and ourselves a favor!

Makes me feel hungry knowing that I can eat most of what chickens eat . We can all share ,get healthy together and have a great life. Thanks for your knowledge this is definitely lifestyle changing for me in suburbia with my 3 beautiful hens.

This is an excellent article on the topic of alternatives to commercial feed, which is a matter of some concern to quite a lot of BYCers right now (May 2022). It is full of useful advice, well written, and with links to further reading on some of the issues. Thanks TwoCrows :clap

Fabulous read & it covers so many areas. Very thought provoking!
These interesting techniques reduce feed consumption and also supply healthier and richer constituents in a chicken's diet. It also contains the list of food that is either safe or fatal to your flock. I am watching this article and will definitely read again!

There are quite a few how to feed your flock articles on BYC. Unfortunately many follow the feed your chickens commercial feed and anything else is treats dogma.
Comparatively few who keep chickens in the wider world feed commercial feed; many here and elsewhere I have been, would be feeding their flock much as this article describes.
Chickens are omnivorous, it's one of their great survival advantages.
This article is going in my must read section.
