Mixed Scovy Ducklings - Hatch Grow Journal - Update 2/2011 - Lost One

Yes, that sweet lovely trilling (sp?) or whistling sound is what all the Muscovy hens do. I just love it! The boys make a hissing type sound. Mallard derived breeds quack. That choclolate and blue is stunning Nifty. Did you say they were a cross? If so, do you know what with?

their bills are too long to be muscovies, the thing is my muscovies hatched on monday and the app. 35th day was saturday. but like i said it was app. and my hens sat on them so the could have started early. but ya muscovies bills are short with a bigger bean at the tip of the bill

My 4 Muscovy females all make that noise when they are "in season". But it is much quieter than that. I guess the duck in them brings the volume up a little. Very cool.

Nifty, I have been gone from BYC for far too long and have been just beginning to catch up. Of course, I had to start with this thread!! Just watched the video of the 3 G'babies almost all grown up

That is way too cute and silly. I love the noise they make. It sounds similar, though quite a bit louder, to my purebred Scovy girls when they are really henny!! Have they changed much since you took it? Those are the only babies out of my Ancona this year. Her choice of nesting sites has not been the best. I'd love to see an updated pic or two if you get a chance.

Some very sad news: Unfortunately something (probably a dog) attacked our ducks this morning and killed Alana's favorite "Lemon" and really injured "Brownie" (pictured below). We made a bad choice in being a bit more liberal with letting them free-range more around the yard after all the heavy rains... they just love the huge puddles so much.

We aren't 100% when it happened, or by what, but based on the fact that they almost 100% time are in the coop locked up with the chickens at night, and that the necks were heavily mauled, we're pretty sure it was a dog. The only other predators we have in the area are coons, and they always end up taking off the whole head, so we're pretty sure that wasn't it.

The other duck is fine as are all our chickens, which were all free ranging as well.

Brownie has significant damage to her neck and my wife is treating her the best we can.

Poor ducks and our poor girls.

Nifty, Give all your girls a

from us. I'll be praying that Brownie makes a full recovery. I hate when people don't control their dogs!
