The "Love Shack" un roman d'amour; a love story

The 1st photo is when the coup was just completed. The secondary pictures were from today. Kind of embarrassed about the mess, but it's cold here so we have to do heavy Spring cleaning after the thaw. It was coated with Linseed Oil to protect the would, Electric was added to accommodate a light...

    Bresse Chickens

He was just over 1 year & carcass weight around 6lbs. He needed slow cooking, but the flavor was good, just different.

    Bresse Chickens

We butchered our 1st Roo. He was sexually mature. I "Practiced Caponizing" on his car is...quite tricky. I still need a proper rib spreader. Nonetheless the neat looked & smelled very similar to Turkey. I did finish on raw milk(goat& cow). It was interesting.

The French Bresse is a blue footed chicken. I think you're getting caught up in Symantec's. It's the same bird.

    Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

I raised up lavs from eggs I purchased from TN. The hens were average layers until their 1st molt. Then BAM! I've had 0 eggs since July! The light has helped the other hens, but the blue layers have gone dry at 1 year of age. I don't get it! They all share the same coop, feed & light. ...

    Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

By size I'd take the larger one, but you can't pick on size alone. Other things to consider are the color of the legs (solid or any white patches), beard fullness, and feather quality, which looks like right now their feathers are just coming in. I'd say wait til Spring. That way you can tell...

    Bresse Chickens

No body is crowing except the older Roo. I have a couple pullets laying now and really their combs are as big as the suspected cockerels (except the laying females combs do not stand straight up. They are floppy). With this small flock I can't afford to kill off a pullet! I guess I might have to...

    Bresse Chickens

I have a small flock of Bresse that are about 6 months and am having difficulty sexing the boys from the girls. My older Bresse, no problem, but these teenagers do not have any real traits that I can discern from as some girls have larger crops. I don't want to feed the boys all winter & really...

    Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

I've bred my Lavender Roo to my Blue Marans as a personal project to produce a Lavender Olive Egger line. Otherwise I've kept my lavender ameraucana line pure. And yes, I have bred birds from the same lines (sibling birds) to lock in desirable traits. You can do this for only a few generations...

    Bresse Chickens

Both males and females display this dominant behavior. Females have a pecking order. Dominant females will show ruffled neck feathers & chest bump for their place in the flock. The most dominant females will roost right next to the Roo.

    Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

Podgal, I too have been breeding Lav Ameraucana's. I don't seem to have the bad fretting (even with free ranging) that seems to be prevailing. My roo produces 100% Lav When Bred to my Lavenders. & 50% Lav when bred to a blue. They have nice beards & have very nice blue/green eggs. I live in...

still losing chicks to cocci on day 3 of corid treatment. is this normal?

New chicks have no built up immunity to cocci, but all chickens will be exposed to it during their life. Besides feeding medicated chick starter feed also add some probiotics to their water. Plain yogurt mixed with some regular yeast, the crumbles & warm water to create a mash helps them develop...

    depression in hens

Chickens definitely get depressed! It's even a clinically recognized symptom, as it's usually associated with an illness. But I've seen depression in healthy birds when there's been a change in flock mates or moving from one location to another. They are very social creatures that like...
