    Brooder Live Cam is up

As a rank first-timer, I appreciate the knowledge gained here on BYC re: the MHP and its benefits for the new chicks. I combined the MHP (heating pad set on Medium) with a suspended heat lamp, dialed down on a dimmer (old-school Variac transformer) to set 100*F under the lamp. When I took the...

    Brooder Live Cam is up

Chicks arrived today and went right into the pre-heated brooder - ordered 10 and received 11, so far they mostly seem to be doing well. Check out the Chick Cam livestream, up on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNw39-JzI5o -

    Waiting for Chicks to Arrive...

Thanks Evadig! I have ordered a mix of Barred Rock, Cinnamon Queen, and Austra White. This is my first go at brooding chicks, and I don't know much... I'm hoping the Mama Heating Pad brooder approach will help ensure success.

    Waiting for Chicks to Arrive...

Expecting 10 chicks to arrive late next week from the hatchery, meantime, the "new chick palace" with Mama Heating Pad Brooder has been made ready to receive - this will hold them in the warmer house ambient for the first week or two until they fuzz up some and I think can be safely moved into...

    Another Mama Heating Pad example

Thanks to all for helpful comments - I am planning some small mods to address deficiencies in my MHP example: - adding threaded-rod extension legs at each corner of the MHP frame, to be able raise the frame's height as needed as the chicks grow - blocking out the two rear inside frame corners...

    Another Mama Heating Pad example

Hi aart - Thanks for the feedback! I am planning on 10 chicks to use with the MHP, my thinking was that the single 24" long opening would be enough of an egress.... - the garden wire is a 2"x3" grid , hopefully that is large enough to avoid chicks getting their heads stuck in the wire?

    Hello to all from Alabama

I have posted some pics of my rough embodiment of the Mama Heating Pad brooder, over at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/another-mama-heating-pad-example.1608750/ - your review / comment on my handiwork and planning would be welcomed: the chicks are due to be delivered in late Feb...

    Another Mama Heating Pad example

I am absolutey new to brooding newly-hatched chicks: no 250W heat lamps ("Easy-Bake Oven"?) for me! Instead, I have built up my own example of the Mama Heating Pad brooder "cave", with grateful thanks to all the good MHP information I have found here on BYC. I am using the basic Sunbeam XL...
