As a rank first-timer, I appreciate the knowledge gained here on BYC re: the MHP and its benefits for the new chicks. I combined the MHP (heating pad set on Medium) with a suspended heat lamp, dialed down on a dimmer (old-school Variac transformer) to set 100*F under the lamp.

Chicks arrived today and went right into the pre-heated brooder - ordered 10 and received 11, so far they mostly seem to be doing well.

I have ordered a mix of Barred Rock, Cinnamon Queen, and Austra White.
This is my first go at brooding chicks, and I don't know much... I'm hoping the Mama Heating Pad brooder approach will help ensure success.
Expecting 10 chicks to arrive late next week from the hatchery, meantime, the "new chick palace" with Mama Heating Pad Brooder has been made ready to receive - this will hold them in the warmer house ambient for the first week or two until they fuzz up some and I think can be safely moved into...
Thanks to all for helpful comments - I am planning some small mods to address deficiencies in my MHP example:
- adding threaded-rod extension legs at each corner of the MHP frame, to be able raise the frame's height as needed as the chicks grow
- blocking out the two rear inside frame corners...

I am planning on 10 chicks to use with the MHP, my thinking was that the single 24" long opening would be enough of an egress....
- the garden wire is a 2"x3" grid , hopefully that is large enough to avoid chicks getting their heads stuck in the wire?
