They usually go where they know to roost, but if they're new birds and weren't homed properly they can sometimes wander away from the group. I've let newbies range with the flock and they follow the others well enough but some were a few crayons short of a 48 count and would wander off to roost...
I wonder if they're from the same house. Like a neighbor that let them range and they got lost in the woods or something. Hopefully they weren't dumped, but I know some people dump critters just because they can.
I've been giving them egg shell on the side. They've hardly touched it - most of my hens are on winter break right now though with their age. Calcium isn't *as* important when they're not actively making egg shells.
Usually it's a crumble feed. Depending on who makes it, between 20-24% protein.
Edit to add I saw you use Nutrena brand in earlier comments. Their meatbird is 22%.
I've been feeding mine meatbird for the extra protein. They really enjoy it and go after it first right now. I've been mixing meatbird and layer to make sure they still get some calcium and they pick and choose what they need most.
I had a chihuahua and like most chis he thought he was big and bad until a broody hen chased him from her chicks and pecked his face. He stayed glued to my heels after that any time we went outside together 😂
I've never had other dogs around them, but my neighbors let their mutts wander in a...
PETA euthanizes more animals than they adopt out, perfectly fine animals that can be rehomed. PETA believes *no animal* should be tethered by human connection, as any relationship with an animal is exploitative.
They're a terrible organization at the heart of it.
These are her siblings. The blue barred guy looks JUST like his grandpa. His mom is the OE*Brahma cross - she creates sex linked males for me since she hides the Barring gene.
One of my olive egger mixes is half brahma. Her mom is the splash brahma in the pen, but her dad was the multiple generations in olive egger mix. His legs were sparsely feathered, and even her mom doesn't have super dense feathering on her feet like the buffs have.
The olive egger mix daughter...
I forgot one - a buff olive Egger mix. Her mom was buff orpington and her dad was a generations deep olive egger. She has passed away since I hatched these guys.
I bred a Blue Copper Marans to my flock. I know her mom is one of my pea combed hens, and that leaves me a couple of options;
Buff Brahma
Splash Oliver Egger mixes (2 different hens)
Splash Brahma
Green Queen mix
Lavender Ameraucana
A blue/red Easter Egger (idk how to describe her other than...
