I had been cleaning her wounds with everything you mentioned here, but stopped when they appeared to be healing over. But what you're saying about sealing in infection makes sense.
If I put her out with the flock and also moisten her wounds up, do you think that could increase the risk of...
I have been cleaning them with Vetricyn and triple antibiotic ointment.
I have oral antibiotics but I'm reluctant to give them at this stage.
I'm going to set up another crate for her and try to get her out with them more frequently. Thanks!
She laid an egg 2 days prior to the attack. She only lays a couple eggs a week, I think. I had 2 Marans in the flock and I couldn't always tell who laid what.
Is there anyway the fox attack could cause her to have water belly or some sort of other issue? Or maybe the stress of the attack has...
Yes, I have a crate I can put her out with the flock more. I've only done short once a day visits because I was worried about flies getting to her wounds. I bought her a shirt and tried to put it on her but she declined to wear it, lol. I will give it another try.
Before the attack she was not...
Last week, my 2 Marans escape artists got hit by a fox. One was killed and one survived with wounds to her back. The wounds seem minor- compared to many posts I've scoured here- and seem to be healing well. They're dry and beginning to scab over. In the last week, the hen (Doobie), has perked up...
I have 2 feisty little Sicilian Buttercups I purchased as sexed chicks. It’s my first time with this breed.
One chick, Blossom, is particularly feisty. She spars constantly with my EE cockerel even though she’s half his size. I just thought her feistiness and boldness was her breed. But now...
Thank you for sharing about Delta’s recovery. I just lost 1 hen and have 1 injured from a fox yesterday. I’ve read several posts like this looking for advice and inspiration. Not everyone provides long term updates, so it gives me hope to see Delta’s healing.
Thanks for responding!
So if Solo is barred, would the barring have to show through everywhere that he has dark color? Aside from white/light colors, are there other colors that can hide barring? If his tail feathers have to show barring, then he's definitely not barred. Here is a more current...
Sounds perfect!
I know what you mean. These things always happen at the most inconvenient times! I feel your frustration.
That depends on how bad the injured birds. If they’re not too bad off (no obvious tempting wounds or acting unwell) I’d let them back in the flock in just a couple days...
The injured chicks will likely continue getting picked on by the others. I would seperate them- preferably keep them with the others but in a crate. If there is only 1 aggressive chick, it should also be removed. It may need to be culled if it's harming the others you don't have an alternate...
Okay, I can't seem to let this go. @NatJ you've helped me figure out parentage in the past, maybe you can offer some insight into who Solo's parents could be?
Solo's dad could be either a Bielefelder or a silver w/ red & blue mixed breed rooster.
Solo's mom is supposed to be a black w/ gold...
Interesting. And your bird's feather coloration is similiar to mine, with the pale tips. How old is your BO? Is it from Hoover's?
I know diet can play a role in the feather development, but all my birds eat the same thing and the rest all have clean, neat, tight feathering. Unless this one...
